That sounds like a Brthurism.
I’m kind of with Gronk that while defence was shit under BA, you can’t absolve the players of wearing some blame. Whilst there’s a simple response to fixing a lot of our defensive issues, it’s not a simple course of action to fix it. I hope they can and I think the players we’re moving on and bringing in indicate we’re going to focus more on mobility, that’ll mean that certain players who maybe focus more on the attacking side will have less spots available if they don’t equally fix up their defence/attitude, which is what I think Gronk meant.

Let’s not beat around the bush, Ryles/Moa need to fix problems with Paulo, Matto, Lano & Greigo for us to see real improvement. What’s the likelihood they can?
Well a new coach and fresh start will help.

Its a new era and will bring fresh excitement.

We have been stale and stagnant for a long time and the players/coaches all got too comfortable under the previous regime.

@Stevie said the pre-season schedule will be different this year and a lot tougher.

So for starters i expect our players will be fitter next year which will help have us have less fatigue and should mean our defence is better then what it has been with better commitment and attitude.

Matto's problem is getting him on the park most weeks. The bloke misses on average 6 games per year with injury. It hasnt been anything to do with ability.

Well if you read my initial post i said realistically i think we will finish around 12th with the surgery Ryles has done with the roster. With the experience lost and the young kids being brought in it will bring inconsistency.

You do the math that's 3 spots above where we finished this year.

I never said Ryles would have us in the top 4 next year if he does how good and his a genius.

If injuries don't hit and we stay injury free we have the potential to push for a top 6 spot because there isn't much between 6th-12th in most seasons.

Sometimes its just down to the close games and how many of those you win.

Defence can be fixed pretty easily attitude and effort. That's what i want to see and will be keeping my eyes on.

Your kidding yourself if you think we showed consistent defensive grit and attitude during much of BA's tenure we finished bottom 4 in defence in 4 out of the 11 years under BA.
The team wasn’t shit this year, it underperformed. If it performs to standard next year (and has average luck with injuries/suspensions) it should comfortably finish mid-table, just like in 2023.

If Gutho sticks around its a game changer for next year. As we have an elite backup to cover every position in the backline for any injury.

And i would be more confident of us making a push for finals with full availability across our top 6 or 7 players.

But going off gut feel i don't think that Gutho will be here next year.
Then it is clearly a mistake to let Gutho go and not replace him with a suitable option for 2025.

I agree that Ryles is doing good things but just because he is, doesn’t mean others will. We’ve seen it in the past when sometimes bad things happen, we decide it’s all a bit too tough for us. I think there’s a good chance that the prospect of Stevie’s rumoured preseason may not appeal to some players.

I never said I was leaving the forum.
I could’ve sworn that somewhere in the 300 posts about it being the end of civilisation and you never ever going to post again and swearing that was the last post you were going to do, you posted that you were never coming back.

Not that I'm aware of.

I was obviously right with the result of Moses absence though, including that it was possible he'd played his last game with BA as the coach.

Just like Ciraldo

Ryles will weed out the soft cocks very quickly.

Ciraldo had Dogs top 4 defence within 2 years.

That should be goal for Ryles & Moa.

Next year is the transitional year to set things up.

Hopefully we jump up out of the blocks and the rebuild is quicker then we anticipate.

I want to see improvement in defence what we do in attack is basically irrelevant.

History is a big indicator and unless your Top 4 in defence then 80% chance you won't be winning the comp.

You get the defence sorted your are well on your way to winning a premiership.

Look at the Roosters & Manly this year awesome in attack but come finals time they got swallowed up and flogged because of there shit defence. What they had in attack was redundant in the end.

Since 1998 the two seasons 2005 & 2001 were the years teams who won the comp weren't in the top 8 in defence. Ironically that was also the years we were ranked 1st.

Brian Smith had us consistently in top 4 in defence for majority of his tenure and while we didn't win a comp we were certainly in with a shot by making it to the preliminary final on a regular basis.

Nice insight. BA and his crew basically had no f**king idea how to consistently defend. The last two years were an abomination which tells me that he should have been sacked after the lucky GF appearance.

I think we're a top 8 side.....and if we don't make the 8, Rylesy will feel my WRATH...
Agree, with the halves we have we should always be top 8. Next year is a consolidation year for us I reckon so bottom of top 8 with an expected top 4 finish for 2026 as the young fellas in the squad develop experience and learn the systems put in place. These systems should filter down to the lower grades as well so continuity throughout all grades.

Which is what I believe Gronk was attempting (hamfistedly) to say.

That’s like saying that turd doesn’t stink, it’s just brown.
