All the years before 2019 don't count because the club was unstable. Any coach would've failed. In fact, plenty did. After we got a new board, Arthur got us into the grand final. Then the salary cap ripped our team apart and we declined for two years.

Even if this is still true, I don’t think it’s something you can change just by telling merkins to try harder. The best defensive teams have the best individual defenders and workers. Even if they have the best defensive attitude, it’s more likely inherent to the player than something they were taught in the preseason.

Young players improve their defence with experience and maturity. In fact poor defence is usually the thing that prevents talented youngsters from becoming regular first graders, even when their attack is more than ready.
