The last Eels coach prior to Ryles (not counting the interim) didn’t seem keen on recruiting first graders — at least not if it meant dropping his favourites. I think Ryles has shown a preference for change rather than sticking with the status quo. No doubt the recruitment and retention team were somewhat hampered by the previous coach’s requirements — hopefully Ryles doesn’t impose the same limitations on them.Yep. Ryles has inherited a basket case. Hopefully he can buck the trend of the last 10 Eels coaches and deliver the chocolates, but I’m not confident.
Sacking coaches? We'll just keep doing the same thing that always works.
Keeping the same incompetent plodders.Sacking coaches?
True but we need the CEO, HOF etc to be one minded in the pursuit of success and able to guide the club with decisions. If they couldn’t see the ageing and not fit for purpose players, then they didn’t do their job. Anyway , appears Ryles has a grasp on the changes needed, need the R&R team to finalise and provide the players needed to start moving up the NRL.The last Eels coach prior to Ryles (not counting the interim) didn’t seem keen on recruiting first graders — at least not if it meant dropping his favourites. I hope not.The previous Eels coach recruited: Isaac De Gois, Beau Champion, Brad Takairangi, Reece Robinson, Anthony Watmough, Danny Wicks, Michael Gordon, Michael Jennings, Clint Gutherson, Beau Scott, Keiran Foran, Josh Hoffman, Suaia Matagi, Nathan Brown, Frank Pritchard, Mitchell Moses, Blake Ferguson, Shaun Lane, Reagan Campbell-Gillard, Isaiah Papali'i amongst others. Not saying they were all great, or even good here, but to say Arthur didn't seem keen on recruiting first graders is disingenuous.
We didn't seem keen on recruiting first graders from about the end of 2020 onwards. Was that because all of a sudden we (or the coach) didn't want to recruit first graders or because we then had to shift our focus on retaining the squad that had made the previous 3 of 4 finals series and would go on to to make the following 2?
Of course a new coach would bring change amongst the playing group, he has a different philosophy on how he wants to play. Once Ryles is settled on the squad that he wants, and hopefully they're consistently making finals, do you think we'll see as much change as we are right now?
My tip is when the team does well, there will be less turnover of the roster and when it does poorly there will be more roster changes. This is the case with any coach.
And yet merkins still assume we are moving players on because we have a new coach. How do they know we didn't get a new coach after we had decided to turn the roster over? I don't believe a rookie coach would be allowed to make these sorts of decisions. Most NRL coaches wouldn't have this sort of power. Even at the Dolphins under Bennett, recruitment was done by committee: https://www.stan.com.au/watch/dawn-of-the-dolphinsTop notch analysis
I expect nothing less

The list management group
I'm sure they've been doing it for years. In 2018 it was reported that we had the smallest football club staff and we needed to give the coach more support. Recruitment and retention was an easy thing to take off his plate because it concerns futures rather than current operation of the NRL side. Plus there is definite conflict of interest when it's left in the hands of the coach. Why now? Not a year ago? Why so many?
