Nathan Tinkler takes over Jets
22 Sep, 2010 12:30 PM

Mining and racing magnate, Nathan Tinkler has stepped in to take on the Newcastle Jets licence, Football Federation Australia announced today.FFA said that the Newcastle Jets team would be continuing in the Hyundai A-League under new ownership arrangements.

The FFA board determined, after a series of meetings with the club and its owner, that the club did not have the ability to meet the club’s short or long term obligations and has therefore decided to withdraw the licence.

A statement from Football Federation Australia said the club had been given numerous opportunities over recent weeks to show it had the financial capacity to continue operating, including at meetings in recent days with FFA management and with the FFA Chairman and FFA Deputy Chairman.

Businessman Nathan Tinkler has stepped in to take on the Newcastle Jets licence and secure the Club’s future for the remainder of the season.

“We have signed an agreement with Nathan Tinkler which secures the Club’s participation for this season,” Ben Buckley said today.

“The agreement also grants an option for him to acquire the licence for the long term.

“This is a fantastic result for the Hyundai A-League, the club and the people of the Newcastle area.

“Ever since our first discussion I could tell that Nathan was an extremely proud Novocastrian and I welcome his involvement in football.

“Starting immediately we will be working with Nathan to broaden the support base of the club and engage the entire football and business community of the Hunter region in a campaign to secure its future in the Hyundai A-League for
years to come.

“We are very hopeful that the fans and the local business community will demonstrate their commitment to the Club and lead to Nathan taking out the licence on a long-term basis.”

Nathan Tinkler said his aim was to save the club for the people and the development of the game in the region.
"My family and I have been supporters of the Newcastle Jets for years and we are delighted to be able to step in and support the club for the City of Newcastle,” Nathan Tinkler said.

“I have no desire to own a football club but provide a nursery for the development of the game for the thousands of young football players in the Hunter region.

"I urge all of the Hunter community to get behind the Jets and show their support by showing up for the games and becoming members of the club.

“We are keen to get as many sponsors on board as possible. Newcastle deserves a top class A-League team and we are keen to help rebuild the club for the city.

“I have faith in the A-League and the concept of the national competition and I expect Newcastle will play a big role in that future.”

Buckley recognized the contribution of Con Constantine to the Club since it inception and said it is regrettable that he could no longer maintain his ownership of the Club.

“Con has been the key figure in the establishment of a proud and successful club with the high point being its premiership win in 2008.

“He has been a tremendous supporter of football in this country for many years and he has thrown his heart and soul into the game and the Newcastle Jets.

“I would like to thank him on behalf of the football community for all that he has done over the years.

“I would also like to thank the players, staff and fans of the Newcastle Jets for their patience during the past couple of weeks.”

As deep as my hate is for the Jets and all things Novacastrian, the A-League without the Jets wouldn't be as enjoyable.

Great news.

Good news, although very interesting given he was always touted to buy the Knights.

As a Mariners fan it was pleasing to hear of the Jets' trouble but at the same time it would be a tragedy for both clubs as well as the A-League itself if a rivalry like the F3 Derby were to cease.

Pity they're waiting for late November before we play it too...

I'm glad they did. Con, for all of his generosity over the years, is ego-maniacal poison. He should never be in a position with such absolute power again.

Businessman Nathan Tinkler has stepped in to take on the Newcastle Jets licence and secure the Club’s future for the remainder of the season.

This part concerns me.

I have a bad feeling that when we don't get the 2022 World Cup in December, the A-League will go to sh!t, and Lowy will pull out.

isnt there some whisperings about Tinkler wanting to buy the Knights as well and amalgamate them as some kind of cross code super club?

Nathan Tinkler commits to Newcastle Jets licence until 2020

October 01, 2010
Multi-millionaire Nathan Tinkler has advised Football Federation Australia that he will extend his ownership of the Newcastle Jets A-League licence until 2020.

The Jets began the season in a financial crisis, unable to pay players, but were given a lifeline when Tinkler took up the interim licence two weeks ago.

His decision to now activate an option to extend his stewardship is the surest sign yet that stability isn't far away for Newcastle.

Tinkler said he is confident the local community is behind the team and that the Jets have long-term viability in the A-League.

"When I took up the interim licence two weeks ago I said that we wanted to gauge the support for the club from the local community and local business sector,'' Tinkler said.

"I am pleased to say that the response so far from all facets of the Hunter community has been overwhelming and that has given me the confidence to commit to the Newcastle Jets for the long term.

"Our aim is to build the Newcastle Jets into a great asset for the Hunter community, Jets members and as a nursery for football talent in the region.

"This announcement is another step along that road.''

FFA chief executive Ben Buckley said Tinkler's commitment is a fantastic result for the A-League, the club and the people of the Newcastle area.

"I urge all of the Hunter community to continue to get behind the Jets and help Nathan and his team build something special,'' Buckley said.

Jets Executive Chairman Ken Edwards said the club was now in a position to make positive long term strategic moves around club operations and the player roster.

"This commitment will enable us to get on with the serious business of building the strength of the club on a whole range of levels,'' Edwards said.

"We are now working on securing the coaching staff, the playing roster and seeking further community and business support for the long term.''

Jets attempting to lure Beckham

ABC October 19, 2010, 4:07 pm

The Newcastle Jets have revealed an ambitious bid to lure football superstar David Beckham for an exhibition game with his club LA Galaxy.

The Jets, rescued from dire financial woes only this month by a colourful mining magnate, said they were in talks with Galaxy and Football Federation Australia (FFA) about the "exciting opportunity".

"The Newcastle Jets can confirm that the club is in negotiation with LA Galaxy and the FFA to stage a match at Energy Australia Stadium," a statement said.

Bringing Beckham "would be a wonderful boost for football and the entire community," it added.

Executive chairman Ken Edwards said Beckham could be playing in the 26,000-capacity stadium as early as next month after the Major League Soccer season wraps up.

"We're talking two dates at the moment, there is a date available in 2010 and if we're not successful with that there is another date in 2011 we're negotiating," he said.

A visit by Beckham would be a major coup for the former A-League champions who were earlier this month bailed out by youthful tycoon Nathan Tinkler.

The FFA said the governing body supported the bid, which follows the ex-Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder's 2007 sell-out appearance in Sydney.

"We are aware that the Newcastle Jets are in negotiations with LA Galaxy and we are fully supportive of their intention to bring them out for an exhibition game," a spokesman told AFP.

Former England captain Beckham appeared in front of 80,000 fans at Sydney's Olympic stadium during Galaxy's successful 2007 visit to Australia and New Zealand.

Sydney FC won the fixture 5-3.

Mr Edwards says he expects the Newcastle side would be just as competitive if the game goes ahead.

"The Jets will be competitive, absolutely, there's no question we'll give the Beckham-led Galaxy a run for their money, absolutely."

A return trip to Australia in 2008 fell through after Beckham organised a loan stint with Italy's AC Milan, according to reports at the time.

The Newcastle Herald said Beckham would be the biggest player to visit the coal town since 1967, when legends Bobby Charlton and George Best played for Manchester United against Northern NSW.

Good on the Knights.

Clubs being kicked out or folding is not a good thing in any circumstance in this comp.

Tinkler is really looking to engage the community already and by taking some short term losses he can build a long term supporter base.

That said, unfortunately the Fury will spoil the party next Wednesday!

Galaxy of stars to shine in Newcastle

Wednesday, 20 October 2010

The Newcastle Jets will play host to the LA Galaxy, featuring superstars David Beckham and Landon Donovan, for an exhibition game on Saturday 27th November at EnergyAustralia Stadium, having agreed to terms for the challenge match late last night.

In an amazing coup for the Hunter Region, the Jets together with the State Government of NSW, in particular Minister for the Hunter, Jodi McKay, the Galaxy will spend four days in the region.

“Jodi, together with the Jets, have worked very hard over the past 72 hours to ensure this exhibition match happens for the people of the Hunter. On behalf of the Jets I thank the NSW Government sincerely for their financial support and the great personal support provided by Jodi to get this deal over the line,” said Ken Edwards, Executive Chairman of the Newcastle Jets.

Minister for the Hunter Jodi McKay is excited not only about the tourism opportunities this presents but also the economic and general exposure benefits to the Hunter.

"This is fantastic news for football fans and for tourism in the Hunter. The phenomenal global interest in David Beckham, World Cup hero Landon Donovan and the LA Galaxy team means Newcastle and the Jets will be in the spotlight for sports enthusiasts from around the world,” said Minister McKay.

"There's sure to be a great deal of global media interest in David, Landon and the LA Galaxy visit to Newcastle and in the game itself. It’s sure to generate interest in Australia and around the world for the Hunter as a great place to spend time.”

The Jets will be formalising ticketing deals and other exciting opportunities for fans over the coming days.

“We will be making sure families and young footballers have the opportunity to be exposed to this once in a lifetime chance to see one of the world’s premier footballers in action,” said Executive Chairman Ken Edwards at the announcement.

“Tickets will go on sale in a staged manner, with our original and very loyal Season ticket holders and Members the first to be able to secure their seats. This will be followed by new family season ticket holders who have joined following our great ticketing offers and then the general public. We encourage people interested in tickets or corporate hospitality to register their interest via the Jets website,’ said Ken.

“This is such an exciting time for the Jets and the football family, we can’t wait to roll out our next stage,” he said.

The LA Galaxy are presented by Herbalife, a global network marketing company that sells weight-management, nutrition, and personal care products intended to support a healthy lifestyle. Herbalife will also be an official sponsor of the match between the Galaxy and Newcastle.
