Tigers gain time for hearing defence
23Aug07
A HEARING to determine if The Entrance Rugby League Club is guilty of breaching the Jim Beam Cup competition rules will now be held today or early next week.

The Tigers will answer an allegation of fielding an unregistered player in the Jim Beam Cup loss to Cabramatta on August 11.
The hearing was to be heard on Wednesday but the Tigers requested more time to put their case toghether after only receiving the charge sheet on Monday.
The drama follows the first division controversy surrounding The Entrance fielding an unqualified player in its win over Ourimbah and appears to have taken a toll on Tigers football manager Gary Launt who resigned on Wednesday.
On Sunday at Bateau Bay Oval the Tigers play sixth-placed Belrose and must win to secure a top three spot before next week's semi-finals.

Actually The Entrance is guaranteed a spot in the top 3 regardless of whether they win on the weekend (assuming the breach referred to does not result in a loss of points). The Entrance have a 187 point F/A advantage over Windsor, who are 2 points behind.

dam demons found another way to lose a game today lost to bulls 26-24. demons lead 16-4 at halftime then crap 10 minutes in second half saw bulls score 3 tries to take the lead 20-18, demons then hit back to lead again 24-20. with about 10 to go the demons were attacking bulls line, an intercept saw the bulls race 60m, from the good field position halfback millwood grubbered for himself to cross under the posts giving the bulls the win.

as a sidenote if anyone knows of a club looking for a top notch coach, Tim O'Brien is available, with a coaching staff ready to go. He's pulled the pin after Demons board look like cutting the budget to even less than we had to work with this year.

I noticed Aaron Mercer hasn't been lining up in the centres for Mounties the past few weeks. Does anyone happy to know why? Injury?

Just curious as he's and old school mate of mine.

Also how is he playing? Someone posted earlier his defence is fairly poor... he's had something of a fall from grace since being the top point scorer in premier league for the Roosters in 2005 and going to England for the world club challenge...?

Also, are Mounties a feeder club for anyone in particular?

Thanks for the info one eyed, is there the possibility that the demons will not field
a Jim Beam team in 2008. Most thought that the newer clubs would struggle a little.

gee good result for shellharbour. did cabra play with their full squad or did they rest some players?

Wow good result to Shellharbout alright. I didnt watch this game unfortunately.

But not sure of Cabras squad whether there were any players at rest. Injuries still is Richie Parker, Francis Betham, David Moore and Luke Brannigan.

The back line has been a major concern for Cabra after so many injuries. A big difference noticed with the backline since Francis Bethams exit, not sure if he will be back.

At this time of the year most clubs are not playing with full squads. Shellharbour were without Bryce Poisel and Joe Sang Yum who were out injured.

I have seen him play a few times this year and he played quite well. I dont know if he is injured but Mounties have a problem because of this silly points sytem that operates in JBC. Ghosn signed more players than could fit into the cap and this means the more experienced players have to be rotated with the younger guys playing every week. But it never gets any better - even when you get a discount of one point for all the players that complete a season, all the 2 point players like Matt Hamilton, James Burns, Shane Saunders, Alf Betham etc shoot up to 7 or 5 points next year. So Mounties can never get any stronger until they bring through a lot of local juniors. The points system doesnt make the lower teams stronger it just makes all teams weaker.

Mounties were favoured to be the feeder team to Parramatta NRL next year on the basis of their sleeve sponsorship but the deal didnt happen and now Wentworthville will fill that role.

The August edition of Rugby League Review attributed a quote to Shellharbour officials to the effect that if St George did a deal with Shellharbour to allocate excess NRL players to a Marlins Premier League team, Shellharbour would withdraw from JBC.

Other results: Windsor 44 beat Asquith 12, Chester Hill 32 beat Mounties 24, Wenty 40 beat Erina 10, Belrose 18 beat The Entrance 16.

Final Table: Cabra 35, Bulls 33, The Entrance 32, Windsor 32, Wenty 29, Belrose 28, Mounties 20, Erina 16, Chester Hill 12, Shellharbour 11, Asquith 8, Seven Hills 6.

Windsor will play in the elimination semi unless The Entrance have points deducted over an unregistered player. The Erina vs Shellharbour game is still yet to be played.

They are defenetly fielding a team, they are currently in talks with additional sponsors to make up for the shortfall from the clubs funding.

Windsor Wolves coach Trent Rosa has thrown down the challenge to his senior players ahead of Saturday’s Jim Beam Cup elimination semi-final against the red-hot Wentworthville Magpies at Cabramatta Sports Ground.
Rosa labeled the Magpies the “form team” of the Jim Beam Cup and admitted his young squad would need leadership from the team’s senior players if they are any hope of keeping their season alive.
“They’re a very good side… I’d say the form side of the competition at the moment,” Rosa said of the Ian McCann-coached Magpies.
“We’ve got a young squad but I expect the senior guys to lift and guide the younger guys through.
“We definitely need to lift in attitude, and in a lot of other areas, and I’ll be stressing that to the players this week – but we will be trying to keep things basic.”
Both sides enter the opening week of the Jim Beam Cup finals series on the back of big wins in last weekend’s final round of the regular season. Windsor ran over Asquith 44-12 while Wentworthville handed Erina a 44-10 defeat.

But in the head-to-head department it’s the Magpies who are the frontrunners, having knocked over the Wolves twice already this year – the first being a 54-16 drubbing and recently a 30-18 win.
While Rosa remains confident his side can turn the statistic around on Saturday, he noted Magpies players Brett Sargent and Ben Bailey among his chief concerns.
“Bailey and Sargent – they are both very much keys to that side,” Rosa said.
“Bailey because he has his hands on the ball so much and is always dangerous, and Sargent because he’s very dynamic out wide – a powerful runner and can bend you backwards when he’s out on the fringes.
“We’ve really got to contain those two and we’ve spoken a lot this week about numbering up and defending well. [The Magpies] throw a lot of questions at you.
“[But] all battles are won up front so if we can get it done there it’d go a long way towards getting us home.”
The forwards battle on the day will be supplemented by a wealth of try-scoring talent in each sides’ backlines – an area where Windsor looks to have an advantage.
Heading into the match Wolves fullback Shaun Laurie and winger Chris Barlow, who have caused consistently troubled opposition defences, both remain high on the try-scoring ladder with 19 each for the season.
Magpies coach McCann said his team would be looking to minimise Windor’s ball movement wherever possible in order to prevent their try-scorers of having an impact on the match.
The winner of Saturday’s clash will face the loser of the Sydney Bulls versus Entrance Tigers minor semi final – which kicks off immediately after the Wolves Magpies clash - next week.

Only days out from taking their positions for an unlikely title defence, the Sydney Bulls posted a performance last Sunday that must have remaining opposition coaches lining up for a chance to take a crack at the waning Jim Beam Cup premiers.
Their 26-24 defeat over an unlucky last placed Seven Hills side was a harsh expose' of just how unprepared and unwilling the Bulls are to take on any of the remaining top five sides.
"On that form we run the risk of embarrassing ourselves over the coming weeks", reflected a growingly frustrated Bulls coach.
Down 16-4 at the break, courtesy of some feather-soft commitment to their line, the Bulls' ruck defence resembled a swinging gate of opportunity for the animated Demons' pack who were as surprised as anyone at the Fairfax Community Stadium.
With a major semis spot on the line, and a shaken coaching staff looking on at a potential train-wreck, the Premiers stood to squander a second chance semi, seemingly preferring to fall into the hungry sights of fifth placed Wentworthville.
Demon runners, centre Joe Swamy and forwards Tim Wynn and Ryan Gerrard, took turns at eating metres through the Bulls mid-drift while fullback, Luke Ackroyd, embarrassed the Bulls lock-down as swarthy little pivot Tarik Houchar took it to his opponents with some wily work that could easily have produced a first half blowout.
The second half started on script as the ball was dropped cold by the Bulls from the restart, a penalty in front conjoured from the following set to see the D's out by fourteen.
Within ninety seconds the home side came close to scoring again, as the Bulls' continued their inept display with turtle like speed off their line, borderline discipline and self-indulgent fifth tackle options.
Mercifully it was captain, Paul Winterstein, who put up his hand with an unexpected bust that eventually found Steve Jolly who fed a flying Chris Smith for a crucial Bulls try.
As the Bulls searched for rhythm, halfback, Luke Millwood took the match by the scruff of the neck almost single-handedly, setting up a Troy Bushby score with a sweet short pass. The pint-sized schemerthen helped the Bulls snatch back the lead with a chip kick that found centre Wes Naiqama who swerved and feined his way to the line.
The young Queenslander was not finished there, just when the Demons looked set to regather possession of the topsy tervy clash after a booming try through prop Daniel Hearn, Millwood found the perfect weight to toe through and regather under the posts for what proved to be the match winner.
For the remaining eight minutes of the match, the Bulls hung on desperately to a two point lead that at least gives then an extra seven days to come up with solutions to what has been an ailing campaign leading up to the Championship end of the season.
The semi finals commence at Cabramatta Sports ground this weekend with the knocked out Semi seeing Windsor vs Wentworthville at 1pm followed by the Bulls vs The Entrance with the winner earning the right to play Cabramatta for direct passage to the grand final at Telstra Stadium on the 23rd September 2007
Sydney Bulls 26 (N. Ford, C. Smith, W. Naiqama, T. Bushby, l. Millwood tries; S. Jolly 3 goals)
dft.
Seven Hills 24 (R. Gerrard, J. Swamy, L.Ackroyd,D. Hearns tries; L. Ackroyd 4 goals)

Wenty eliiminated Windsor in the eraly game at Cabra today 24-18. 27 minutes elapsed before the opening score as both sides played conservatively, waiting for a mistake. Wenty followed up when Bailey scooted from dummy half to make in 10-0 but then let the Wolves back into the game for 10-6 scoreline at the Break.

Wenty scored twice in the opening 7 minutes of the second stanza to lead 20-6 and should have closed out the game from there yet again they failed to stop the opposition and with 9 minutes to go there was only a 6 point margin. With the clock ticking down Dalton carried 4 defenders over the line but spilled the ball adjacent to the posts. A converted try would have taken the game into extrea time.

Wenty have been playing sudden death football for 3 months but they didnt do any more than was required to win today. They have had a fairly stable squad and when Frost did not start they were able to bring a player of the calibre of Darren Lang into the 17.

Windsor have lost players like John Russell, Jim Baira, Joel Willoughby, Joel Paton and Wiremu Weepu since the start of the season and players have had to come up from A Grade. Today they looked a bit short when Luke Gordon and Ben Stewart were also missing. Certainly a better finish for the Wolves than last year and they next play in Premier League in March 2008.

Today was the first day of September and in that month some teams have a histroty of performing while others faulter. The Bulls have been in sub prime mode for 5 months but today the bullmarket was alive again. The Bulls blew The Entrance off the park, running up a 16-0 lead in the first 17 minutes. A Couple of repeat sets allowed the Tigers to get one back but the Bulls went in at 22-4 at the break.

The Tigers struck back early in the second half but the Bulls played controlled footy to lead 34-10 with 15 minutes to go. At that point, Adam Tippett and Phil Takchi were seen to choke on their prawns in the Cabra clubroom as the Bulls ran in another 4 tries including some Fiji 7's magic in the remainder of the game to win 50-10.

What a turnaround. Not one result like that in an entire season. Bring on Cabra next week.
