Jim Beam Cup to expand

The Jim Beam Cup could expand to as many as 16 teams in 2006 with a number of clubs looking at joining the competition.

But the New South Wales Rugby League will make sure that all clubs will be able to remain in the competition in the long term.

St Mary’s, Guilford, Narellan and Blacktown Demons have all been mentioned as possible starters plus two other clubs have approached the NSW Rugby League about joining.

Non-Sydney based clubs are also looking to join the competition.

Ourimbah also want to rejoin the competition after they pulled out halfway through this year. They will need to meet the criteria set down by the league.

Rugby League Review I presume.

The JBC has been a massive disappointment. Although an improvement on the Metro Cup as far as club numbers go, it has been plagued by half-starts and withdrawals. I doubt we'll see 16 clubs next year. Remember, the year started with 12 (Narellan included) and is now down to 10 with 2 byes per week.

St Mary's and Guildford should already be there!!!! I don't think Ourimbah should be allowed back. Going by their conduct this year, I'd be wary of any claims they make (just a few months later) about how financial they are.

Yes i read about it in Rugby League Review.

I think its good that they want to ensure all clubs can remain in JBC in the long term. That should stop all the chopping and changing.

This year started with only 11.
Narellan entered the competition in 2004 to then withdraw before the season commenced.
All of the mentioned clubs are questionable and i doubt we'll see any grand increase in team numbers for next season. Although this isnt a bad thing as slow progression will ensure clubs viability can be monitored more efficiently.
Narellan would again struggle to finance a team unless the proposed joint venture with Easts gets the go ahead.
I've heard nothing from Guildford about a return to the Jim Beam Cup although a number of new board members have been appointed, though none with any real football affiliation.
There has been murmums about St Marys returning and I think its one of the more realistic teams to join the comp.
Blacktown are also fairly realistic with their joint venture with Seven Hills working better this year with both senior teams in the finals and Gabbie Stadium being used as the home venue. I'd imagine if not 2006 they will join the competition in 2007.

It'd be interesting if Collegians entered the comp.

They definately have the money and are willing to outlay it on big name players though the points system restricts dominance by big spending clubs and encourages junior development.
To my knowledge Collegians dominance does not carry over from senior to junior league though being the only Illawarra team i'm sure they could poach their rivals best juniors, or better still spend more cash on development.

With the Roosters providing new funding to Narellan and the proposal of upgrades to their facilities, I would assume they'll be in the JBC next year.

I would love to see the JBC expanded to places like Wollongong, Canberra and Wagga and even upto Newcastle, maybe a state league is what is needed.

Beat me to it!

I'd like it to be a state wide comp, just like the Queensland Cup.

There are reports today that the Jim Beam Cup will remain as 10 teams next year but it will expand in 2007.

I played in the under 16's for Collies this season, we ended up folding. No problem with effort put in by Collies, (free rego, free shorts n socks, good coaching) but numbers always seem to be thin at the club.

Can anyone confirm the rumour that Woy Woy has pulled out of the 2006 Jim BeamCup season.
If they did pull out and no other teams joined it would only leave 9 teams in the comp. I think they need to have atleast 10 teams next year.

I find that hard to believe, they have signed Adam Tippett from the Bulls and are making a concerted effort to build up next season. In Goal is correct where there should be a period of consolidation before expanding.

I hope some of the clubs mentioned in the original post get (back) into the competition in years to come. But there's no point coming in for a year (or part year) only to drop out again. So some serious build up before an expansion, and then some seasons of consolidation before looking to incur the extra costs of including areas like Wollongong, Canberra etc, for mine.

I've also heard that Woy Woy have pulled out.

I guess it will be a 9 team comp again next year.

What a shame. When the JBC was launched it was hoped that the bigger non NRL clubs would all have a presence and that it would expand beyond the Metro Cup (which had essentially become a West Sydney + Newtown Cup).
