Joe Galuvao set to sign with Manly Sea Eagles

RUSSELL Crowe once told Joe Galuvao to quit the NRL and become a church minister - but "Big Joe's" rugby league revival will continue this week when he signs a new deal with Manly.

Eels back-rower Galuvao will join Manly in 2010 with the premiers looking to bulk up their back row after losing Glenn Hall (Bradford) and Adam Cuthbertson (Sharks).
Galuvao's career looked all but over in 2007 when he was banished to the Queensland Cup and told to quit his $350,000-a-year contract with Souths and join the church.
But Galuvao dug his heals in and played for Brisbane Easts before the Eels stepped in with a life-line last year.
Galuvao has since returned to the type of form that helped the Panthers to a premiership in 2003 and will continue his career with Manly next year.
The Sea Eagles have made a habit of pinching Eels players of late with Tony Williams and David Williams among the latest to cross the bridge.

I dont mind it, he wouldnt cost much and it seems purely a depth signing. Previously i may have questioned it but Des has been very astute in picking up Rose, Rodney, Hall and the like

I'd say the forwards will look like this

8.Kite
9.Ballin
10.Perry
11.Stewart
12.Watmough
13.Bailey

14.Rodney
15.Rose
16.King
17.Williams

18.Galuvao
19.Lussick
20.Buhrer
21.Mauro

We need a squad player in the forwards for a year or two till Luccisk and Buhrer are ready, Galavuo fits the bill

He'll also be a good influence around training, which after this year is probably needed.

Smoking Joe has been a revelation for Parra for like $ 80000 , enjoy signing him for $150 THOUSAND.

Hows Tony Williams going down your way? Still running with no heart or ball skills?

150k is a bargain for a player who has won a grand final, numerous test caps and has been your 2nd best forward this year. Will be a great backup player for us when Origin comes around next year.

Didn't you see enough of Tony when we toweled you up a few games ago?

Don't mind him - he's just bitter. I'd take Williams back if I could.

As for Galuvao, he'll be good for you guys imo.

Yeah smokin joe will be a good buy, has been great for us this season. Anderson offered him a contract, but couldn't compete with the manly offer.

Good luck to him.

Joe has an rpi of 14 out of 40 meaning he is more than 25% below the NRL average.

On the positives, he is ahead of the NRL average in terms of

a) hit-ups
b) doesnt miss many tackles
c) doesnt make many mistakes

He likes to run the ball and is definately capable of scoring points.

Id say Des would be planning to use him off the bench later in games. Des has a plan for him, no doubt about that.

He is also a good defensive safety in tight matches.

On a personal note, the guy is a champion and has done a lot for kids in trouble and in danger in very rough neighbourhoods out west.

Just the kind of guy to help smooth out the coming fracas over Stewart.

On-feild, of course hes no BK.

That's a good summary.

He'll be good for Manly - he gives his all, and will never let anyone down. Combined with the fact he is a fantastic bloke off the field and you're onto a winner (albeit a slightly older winner).

He'll probably mainly be used for depth, anyway.
