JOEL THOMPSON TO MANLY?

There has to be more to this story and I suspect it has something to do with a new coach wanting to bring a player with him. Only my opinion but this action by Millward does not make sense unless there is a significant recruitment in the pipe line.

I love thommo and I don't want thommo to leave any more than the next dragons fan.

But if you blokes have ever Found yourself complaining that we don't bring through juniors, and then start complaining about this, you might have to take a look at yourself and see if you just like complaining.

The most obvious junior that we have ready to make the step up to first grade is host, whose best position is left edge forward. He won't get a crack at that position unless thommo leaves.
Good reality check post mate. We can't keep everyone. It's all well and good saying we need to promote juniors(me included) BUT there are only so many spots.
I love Thommo but if he is in a position to better his future, good luck to him. He may also be sick of the coach and feels it's time for a change(God knows I do)!

This is an interesting post on a Dragons Fans group on Facebook from September 11

Heard from a very reliable source (his dad) that Joel Thompson is in discussions with Manly, believes he is playing his best football ever and is being underpaid big time.

IMO we have to do what we did with Dugan and Packer, play Moneyball. If he can get a massive deal elsewhere, thank him for his time with us, wish him all the best and replace him with one of our youngsters.

Look, we are absolutely tripping over young backrowers. Thommo's a legend but he's 30. Gypsy's gone around too many times, I wouldn't want to view Thompson the same way I currently see Nightingale

There is more to this.

Millward has always suggested that we have money to spend. We're only paying half of Graham's contract so it's not like his arrival is forcing Thompson out.
Thommo also seems oblivious to all of this (probably playing dumb), so I highly doubt it's because he wants more money, he bleeds red and white.
I think the club must have a plan. They're targeting someone and probably have to shed a player or players to bring them in. They must feel that with Host, Leilua and Sims to cover that left second row spot then shedding Thommo won't have too much of an impact. I tend to agree as well, that game against Manly that Host played at second row in lieu of Thommo was immense. He had a much stronger impact. Further to that, every game Sims has played at second row he's been one of our best.

Don't get me wrong I'll be gutted if Thommo leaves us, but if he really does want more money at this stage of his career, then let him fly. We're covered in that position... And if it's to bring in someone like Koroibete/Crichton/Rona then I won't be too upset.

Thompson's next contract will be his last big contract and he wants to be paid and maybe something more long term, which is fair enough. Don't think we should be committing. This current contract he is on now suggests that we didn't go all out to keep him around and probably won't upgrade his contract.

We have already committed long term to Frizell and De Belin. We still have Sims signed for two more years on a presumably reasonable contract. We have young backrowers coming through. We will be looking to sign (and/or replace) Ah Mau. If Thompson can find a better deal then he should take it.

He's a good footballer and a great club man, he'll be missed if he goes. But he's under contract. Why would the club agree to let him go, unless we need the cap space for another signing?

Hate to say it, as good a bloke as he is, we should not be letting him go unless it also benefits our club. The only way it could benefit our club is if we have a top class winger ready to sign. If that were the case then I guess Sims would get a starting spot and host would get a permanent spot on the bench.

We should have never let Brett Morris and his 20 tries a season go a year early to be replaced by one season Nabuli. We should retain Thompson for one more year to maintain stability and give him a slight pay increase I can not see us making an impact in 2018 without both Packer and Thompson and retaining pedestrian wingers and erratic centres.
