The fact that Newcastle have looked like a bunch of park grade footballers without Johns really defines his ability as a footballer. He owned Queensland at Origin level (sure he was belted once, but I follow Rugby League not le Gran Melee). He invented kicks, he showed that a halfback could be a general, a tactition, a ball runner, player and hit hard in defence.

Off the field I've always thought he was a spoilt, egotistical and arrogant wanker. The fact that he likes the bikkies and is a pisshead doesn't change either view of mine.

he can make an even bigger difference as a role model from this moment on than he did as a player.

certainly some good can be salvaged from this debacle. i hope every player is either exposed or alters their lifestyle to the demands of a "proffessional athlete" "entitled" to a massive paycheque.

Agreed. In a very simplified version of this story this is what happened:
Talented young man did something stupid.

Isn't the first, won't be the last. Being a freak of nature, with skills nobody could understand was amazing, and inspiring in its own way. Overcoming mistakes and hardship is its own form of inspiring. And I know I can relate to overcoming stupid mistakes more than having brilliant freakish talent. I got more of the first than the second.
