Mogsheen thinks JT has surpassed Johns in the rep arena, but still has some way to go at club level.

Having said that, if Dally M's are considered indicative of on field domination (which Johns fans would point to), then JT could very well surpass him on this front come the end of the season.

Matt Orford has won more Dally Ms than Brad Fittler & Darren Lockyer combined.

It's a silly, overrated award.

Sam Burgess was the best player in the NRL by a mile last year.
Equally SBW was the best by a long way in 2013.

The best player probably only wins the award half the time.

Thurston is a great player but at the moment he's not even close to a lot of other past players, let alone Johns. I mean come on.

Stats and awards only go a certain distance when judging a player, its true dally m awards don't always go to the best player, and just because a guys won a premiership doesn't make him a great player ( the shane perry arguement). But the fact Johns was a vital part of 2 premierships has to count for something. Both are great attackers, johns was also a great defender and was vital in 2 premierships and that's why he gets over the line for me

And yet your the one who claimed Thurston has played with Immortals as halves and Johns only special needs kids.

No I'm not, im trying to bring balance to the argument, both have had about equal strength in team mates, knights in joey's era and cowboys in thurston era are very similar teams

One thing you can't deny, Johns had one of the best #9's with him at Newcastle.

Johns was leading the Knights to a premiership before Buderus was even a firstgrade mainstay. Bedsy was a terrific player but Johns was still great without him.

I don't think the Knights missed the top 4 when Joey was in his prime and fit for basically the whole season (he had a couple of severe injuries towards the end of his career).

Same with Freddy at the Roosters. Awful before he arrived, top 4 for 8 of 9 seasons with him including 4 GFs and 6 Prelims,, then awful for the best part of 8 years after he left again.

Quite remarkably the Cowboys have only made the top 4 once during JTs 10 years at the club. Is that really dominance? It just doesn't stack up imo.

I've brought this up in the past to a chorus of boos, hisses and tears. Thurstons record leading the Cowboys is just shit in comparison to actual great players.

For the vast majority of his career Johns would have been the unquestioned "first pick" if you were setting up team from scratch. Easily the best player going around for most of his career.

I don't think you could say the same about JT. Cam Smith, GI, Hayne and Billy Slater have all had stints of "best player in the game" during JT's time. Sure JT has probably been top 3 at worst, but he's never been the undisputed best player for years and years on end.

I notice you mention Joeys long term injuries only.

One had a fat arse and spent years on loldrugs

The other was ballsdeep in Coffs and is a Queenslander

They've both had to overcome massive handicaps - it's line ball in my opinion.
