Like a poster said earlier, keep him at FB, we have a real shot in the finals this year. I would love to see Field be given time at FB also so we can have options there for next year.

I would've loved Duges at right centre next year and would really like to see him there when Widdop returns. I've said elsewhere I think Mann at fullback would work very well for us given his defence, slipperiness and passing, and his confidence is up.

I can't bring myself to slam Duges for taking the 4 years, he has put too much in while playing for us. I also don't feel the club has been unreasonable in its offer, managing the cap for the team on the whole is critical and Duges should not have been retained at the risk of severely weakening the squad because we then couldn't retain other talent, eg Lafai and Mann

OTE="Minh, post: 12212696, member: 37133"]We are a big chance to go far this year so it's not wise to experiment.....Dugan is currently our best FB...[/QUOTE]

And besides Minh Im not sure Mary would risk experiment at this stage he needs to give the team every chance of winning to shore up his own future....thats not to say I wouldnt like to give Dufty for example ago but seriously cant see it happening....

All this talk of the club in a mess really is amusing.
Let's say Josh Dugan re signed for 4 years on the money he wanted. That would guarantee Matt Dufty would walk away when his contract expires at the end of 2018.
And who could blame him?? He now has a chance to show his value to the club by performing in the Illawarra squad. While he definitely needs to work on his defence, which has improved, he has something that the others lack and that's lightning speed. And he loves to follow around for the inside ball. Scored plenty of tries in both 20's and Illawarra that way.
I hope Mary gives him a shot soon. And not just a couple of games, but a decent run to find his feet and confidence.
Our future squad will have Dufty, Host, Leilua and Sele there.
If the Club recognised that the young guns maybe vould not be ready, they could have offered Dugan a mid term extension for an extra 2 years. I'm sure Dugan would jump at this just like Vaughan was happy to recently extend for an additional year.

In 2017 we have Dugan on our roster for about the same sum he signed with Cronulla, we also have Aitken, Milne, Mann and Lafai on our books which is within the cap. So no, especially with Packer moving on, there has always been room in our cap to accommodate the above mentioned players.

When it comes to new signings and upgrades for 2018, the cap is to increase by approximately 2m with Hunt costing approx. 1m although Millward says it is much less than that, Widdop increase of approximately 200k together with about another 500k of various upgrades and we are still within the cap without letting go some of our dead wood.

So however Millward has spent our cap, he needs to adjust within the size of salary to marginal first graders and juniors. If has overspent in this area, then he should not have and must make the necessary adjustments to the roster with consideration being given to unsighed players. Now that Dugan has moved on, Millward gets a free pass for his spending spree even though only 1 new recruit has been signed and that money is less than the increase to our cap.

You mean 2 years ago the club should have extended Dugan for another 2 years on top at that time?

If the club had extended him back then we would have still been paying him more by now, as Dugan would've asked for an increased $$ and then we may have had salary cap issues anyway.

Who was in charge of recruitment back then? Mullohand? Or is that one Millward fault?

I saw a headline which read
SHARKS SIGN DUGAN TO PLAY CENTER. I thought he wants to play fullback lol.

Ducks and Drakes...he wanted 1 mill per season and no one offered him that. Dragons allegedly pulled their offer from the table on Wed. So Cronulla were probably last man standing hence the 10 day cooling off period waived.

In the end, Millward made an evaluation of the player and he was correct in his evaluation. Sticking point was the 4 years because we have Field/Marsters/Dufty coming through. At the end of the day, we can't keep them all so looks like the club is shoring up the Junior prospects coming through.

Don't forget Marsters/Field/Morris etc... If we manage to keep the bulk of these then happy days.

Considering he labelled himself as an elite player some time back you would have thought he would have had more suitors.... good luck to him ... let's move on... as stated in other posts there are many positives for us in all this

I vote for no more Dugan posts ... seriously it's a soap opera

That's ok...I lived at Cronulla and The Shire for many years so was really happy to see The Sharks finally win won..... must have been depressing walking into the club and seeing the trophy cabinet built, but empty for many many years.....apparently they tell me the cabinet only had one shelf, and I thought that's odd but now I can see why..by the way The Dragons have won what is it 16

And glad Bird helped you win one but you lost him to The Brisbane Donkeys now that's depressing .

And as for Duges yes we will miss him BUT he is only ONE of our best players some of our others that come to mind are Tyson Frizell so thanks for him....anyhow you enjoy the rest of the season because I will enjoy mine
