What a lot of ex Steelers don't realise is what we've lost compared to what you've gained. Sure we got juniors out of it, many excellent players, but not having juniors hasn't exactly cramped the Roosters has it? I'm sure we could have poached most of those boys.
Ex Steelers should be glad that at least you've got a decent mascot (or2 if you include the fact that everyone knows who 'saints' are) now. What the bloody hell is a Steeler anyway? A Warilla way of saying thief? I know lots of blokes who work in the steelworks, but they don't call themselves steelers or wear funny american helmets.
And why would you want the steelers jersey anyway? Pride? In what? The Illawarran immortal, Changa, wore the red V. Brand recognition is what the JV goes on about, and so does most of the corporate world. What corporation wouldn't kill for the recognition brought about by the big red V. We should wear it every game.

I'm not anti merger, I like the idea of it. I don't like the unqual split of games, even though it's 2 hours to Kogarah and 30 mins to WIN for me. I can live without the socks and shorts, no matter what magical properties Denis\Daithi thinks they have. But the Steelers, well before the merger I thought they were just plain silly. After, well I though they were Dragons.
I won't go as far as to cheer against the Dragons if they wear the Steelers strip, that's just cutting off your nose to spite your face, but if the JV were the Saint George Illawarra Steelers, I would not be a supporter.

yeah, yeah, I know St.George puts in more money, but the Steelers control the juniors and head the rich Illawarra league.

LMFAO!! Rich, my arse!! At the moment St George Leagues actually hold a secured mortgage over your beloved fire-riddled Steelers Leagues because Steelers owe them to the tune of $8.29 million. One Steelers official has even admitted to the fact that Illawarra basically contribute nothing to the JV saying that "one day we hope to be in a position to make an effort to help fund the JV" or words to that effect.

Cheers,
Ben S.

Illawarra League = The Illawarra Tooheys League and links with South Coast Group 7.
Rich = as in rich in talent.

And as for the LOAN... you would of spent alot more (and each year instead of a one off that will be payed back anyway) to stand alone.

You are all a bunch of f**king clowns...!!!!

So when they're winning there the Mighty Dragons and OOOOooooooo and we
stayed for the whole game when they were getting floged by manly because we
know they would win "SURE". Then when they loose it's crap Illawarra juniors and we don't need them blar blar and I bet you claimed Barrett, Cooper, Timmins, Hornby, Bailey and Ryles when they play for NSW and Australia as a Dragon...!!!

So this crowd average "OKI vs WIN", is that counted at the start of the game or the end when half the OKI crowds leave when the dragons are behind to the score board, Piss Poor and you guy's get 5 not 4 home games ANZAC is a home game.

That'd be the Illawarra League that refused to release a player to the Dragons earlier in the year?? What an advantage we've got...

It was raining or drizzling.... on par with Newcastle in Round 4 and how many people were there in round 4? My recollection is 10,000, there was 13,000 there on Sunday and if we had lost, all you would have heard about was the fan walk out..... It was a wake-up call for the club that these fair weather fans were not about to accept mediocrocy.

Where were all these internationals going to play? Illawarra League? Group 6 or 7? Saints would have gained their share of Illawarra juniors plus we wouldn't have had to deal with the trauma that was the Egg.

That isn't true. The conditions in Round 4 were absolutely atrocious. Shocking.

I'm not complaining though... gave me a real good reason to hand in a Uni assignment late without a penalty!

How many undercover seats does Wollongong have?

I was on the hill and the weather during the game wasn't that bad. It rained worse at the Brisbane game.

Perhaps if we have a 50/50 split with the home games, we should also have a 50/50 jersey and logo.
No, because that wasn't part of the JV agreement.
The Red V was part of the agreement and and 50/50 split was part of the agreement.
In terms of what was agreed to and on the basis of the home ground split, Illlawarra are getting a better deal while St George have been short changed.

We were told down here that the merger would see all home games at WIN from the year 2000.

By whom?

I'm curious as well. First time I've heard it.
Who said that MOS1982?

It was just generally believed that would be the case, I can't remember where it started.
It blew up a bit in 2000 when the JV board signed on with the SFS.

Some guy alleged Bob Millward told him that the JV would play all of it's games in Wollongong from the year 2000 onwards. It was in 1998 at a Steelers, Manly game at Brookvale and Milward was talking about the JV arrangements with a group of people in a corporate area and (allegedly) said that our gain of the JV would be the team moving permanently to Wollongong. The man said he had many witnesses and challenged Bob to take him to court. Nothing eventuated.

This was also reported in 1998 in the Illawarra Mercury that St.George would get the identity but we'd get the games from 2000 onwards (front and back page news). This was something we all still believed throughout the 1999 season, hence the uproar down here when the SFS deal was signed.

Now, I believe either one of two things happened.

Scenario 1:
Either Bobby was led to believe that the JV would end up in Wollongong but nothing was actually officially stated in the agreement. The SFS agreement was signed by the JV and the Steelers group were left red-faced.

OR

Scenario 2:
It was a dirty tactic to lead people on and let us believe the JV would play in Wollongong, as a way of getting us to accept the JV more readily, thinking we'd just forget about it.

The thing that maddens me is - Why didn't the Steelers come out and respond to the media reports, confirming or denying, which stated the JV would be based in Wollongong? Answer... scenario 1 or 2...

Just my thoughts. Unfortunately we can only speculate.

All these "Old School St George Fans" should have a hard long look at them self's in the mirror and see who there supporting
"NOW" The St George "Illawarra" Dragons, Not the St George Dragons and see where most of the team comes from.?

1. Ben Hornby
2. Ben Creagh
3. Matt Cooper
4.
5.
6. Trent Barrett
7. Matt Head
8. Luke Bailey
9. Ryan Powell
10. Jason Ryles
11. Dean Young
12. Justin Poore
13. Shaun Timmins
14. Ashton Sims
Illawarra may have supplied 90% of the team, but you're forgetting St George supplied 100% of the psychological problems. Gasnier, Mundine, Thompson, Blacklock, Riddell, Brown...

Peace. ;-)

Settle down boys! It's supposed to be a happy merger.

Not like the merger between you and ET? Joined cock and mouth.

And I think this should have been an Oki semi. As R2K point out,

Better crowds, better results.

If there is no money on the table, nothing else matters

Sounds similar to the suggestions regarding the continuation of history.
