Wow...bit shocked SG Ball got done. I knew Eddie Paea was a really quality halfback...but I didn't think Souths would beat us by THAT much..i knew they'd win but not by that.

Penrith I think missing a few players, in particular Jarrod Sammut our star five-eight/fullback.

Matthews was a good result.

Cronulla will be hard to stop in Flegg this year.

I watched the Newcastle v Cronulla Flegg trial game at Wyong yesterday.
Cronulla won 22-20 with a try in the last seconds of the game after Newcastle led for most of the game - but I can tell you that most of the Newcastle 'stars' were sitting on the sidelines for the second half. I don't know how Cronulla approached the game - but they didn't look that impressive.

For the record - Newcastle won Mathews, Ball, PL and Firstgrade on the day (at three different venues).

I posted this in the balmain thread but I'll put it here as well in case anyone is interested, match reports from the balmain/manly games.

SG BALL

Balmain started the SG Ball (U18) competition in fine style with a commanding 38-6 victory over Manly Sea Eagles at Brookvale Oval on Saturday, February 25.

The Tigers played some exciting rugby league to lead 28-0 at half-time with second-rower Ahmid Omar scoring three first half tries.

Omar opened the scoring with a try next to the posts. Five-eighth Dane Gernhoefer converted for a 6-0 lead.
A great left hand pop up pass by Balmain full-back Matt Ryan resulted in a try out wide to centre Brendan Train. Gernhoefer converted for a 12-0 lead.

Hooker Ben Falcone then broke from dummy half to race 30 metres to offload to centre Michael Achurch who sent Omar on his way for his second try. Gernhoefer converted for an 18-0 lead.

Omar scored his third try after a great cut out pass by half-back Rhys Jack found its mark for a 22-0 lead.

A beautiful pass from Ryan then saw Achurch score and with Gernhoefer’s conversion, the Tigers led 28-0.

Balmain prop John Kaifoto scored out wide soon after half-time for a 34-0 lead before Manly opened their account with a converted try.

Falcone was then rewarded for a solid game with a try on full-time to give his side a superb 38-6 victory in a performance that would have pleased coach Ray Windle.

Harold Matthews Shield
Balmain lost 26-10 to Manly in the opening round of the Harold Matthews (U16) competition at Brookvale Oval on Saturday, February 25.

Manly raced to a 16-0 lead before Tigers’ five-eighth Junior Goddard showed the ball before stepping inside the defence to score under the posts. His conversion saw Balmain trail 16-6 at half-time.

A fine try to winger Phil Wagener in the corner left the Tigers trailing 16-10 before two further tries to Manly sealed the match for the home side.
