EMERGING Rabbitohs star Junior Vaivai has been stood down following a conviction for assaulting his girlfriend.

The 21-year-old centre, who made his NRL debut in 2009 but plays mainly in the second tier Toyota Cup, today pleaded guilty in Wollongong Local Court to assaulting his girlfriend Renee Laidlaw.
The court was told Ms Laidlaw didn't immediately report the assault to police out of concern for the effect a charge may have on her former partner's career.
Vaivai was convicted of the offence by Magistrate Les Mabbutt and given a two-year good behaviour bond and a $2500 fine.
A Rabbitohs spokesman said Vaivai had been "stood down" once the club were informed of the charge and they were now assessing his future.

"We are considering our position," he said.
Vaivai recently signed with the Parramatta Eels for next season, where he was to join the Rabbitohs halfback Chris Sandow.
The conviction is the latest drama involving rugby league players, with Roosters forward Anthony Watts facing an assault charge as well.

Not to condone what he did, but a worse case was recently in NZ where the Warriors signed a player convicted of bashing/kicking his partner and a unborn child (has been posted on the LU forum if you want to search for the links)
Would be inclined to give him one chance, any transgression and there goes the contract.

it will be interesting to see the disparity in punishment by the nrl between vaivai and watts for basically the same offense i bet watts is nearly ordered to be tickled by a feather in comparison to vaivai

The watts allegations were very very serious. He will not be getting a bond if he convicted.

We have no idea what was alleged here.

I don't see what her gender should have to do with it.

Assault is a crime. Whether the victim's got a c**k or not.

Well club must have known he was facing these charged when we signed him so I can hardly see how it's fair if they tear up his contract now.
