I REALLY don't know what to make of Manly. They have me baffled.
They secured a badly needed victory over the Brisbane Broncos yesterday. However, their performance really delivered mixed messages when it comes to their attitude and desire to get themselves back into the premiership race.
The Broncos had several star players missing from the nominated team, and took the opportunity to introduce a few of their talented youngsters to the starting line-up.
The Manly team was much closer to full strength than their opponents, and given their precarious place on the competition ladder, you would have expected the Sea Eagles to see this as a great opportunity to claim a big scalp and play their way back into top form.
Their pathetic opening gambit gave no indication of such intent.
Their first 30 minutes was dreadful and totally uninspiring. In the remainder of the contest, they showed greater application and urgency, but their execution was poor.
Their defence in the early stages was lethargic and disorganised. In the second half, they defended their goal line with great determination to keep themselves in the contest.
Their attacking plays in the first half lacked control. They showed little composure when half-chances were on offer, and they made even the simplest of plays looks so difficult.
From the moment the second half began, their ball movement was far better, and they executed some well-rehearsed passing rushes to perfection.
The Manly kicking game was absolutely terrible. Matt Orford could not get his fifth-tackle options working at all. He kicked out on the full. He continually kicked the ball dead in goal to relieve pressure on the home side. Very few of the kicks he managed to keep in the field of play were accurate enough for teammates to get a chance to compete for the ball.
Despite all this, when you look at the final stats, they scored three tries from kicks.
The more you examine their game, the more contradictions tend to appear.
After 20 minutes they looked no hope of winning. By midway through the second half, the game was theirs for the taking.
The contrast in effort and body language from one period to the next made no sense. How could a team be so poor, appear so unenthusiastic one minute, then so desperate and committed the next?
The one thing that is certain about this match is that the Sea Eagles would not have won yesterday if it had not been for their livewire centre, Jamie Lyon.
I guess if we talk about contradictions, then this young man epitomises the word. He wants to play football, then he doesn't. He doesn't want to play representative football, but now he does.
When he is on his game there is no better attacking centre in the game.
Every time he handled the ball yesterday afternoon, he was a thorn in the side of the Brisbane defence.
Even in the early stages when Manly looked like they wanted to be anywhere but playing football, Lyon provided a ray of hope.
His three tries for the afternoon all smacked of skill and determination. In all three efforts, he chased kicks and outpaced his opponent to get to the ball first. He lifted his teammates and dragged them from the canvas and into the winner's stall.
On this form, he should be a must for State of Origin with the Blues - whether he likes it or not.
On this performance, I could not guarantee the Sea Eagles are back on track to stage a creditable defence of their title. There were too many poor aspects to their game for my liking.
However, confidence and momentum can sometimes evolve from very humble beginnings.
How they react to this win will be crucial. If the general feeling is one of relief then perhaps the important lessons are yet to be learned.
If they think that on the basis of this one win they are back, then they are deluding themselves.
But if they can look at this performance as the first step in a tough climb back to the top of the mountain then there's still hope they can resurrect their season.
The potential is there. The talent is unquestioned. They need to prove the desire exists.

OK Gus mentioned this twice during the coverage yesterday and then again in his article this morning - correct me if i'm wrong but were Manly not actually missing more players from their 17 than Brisbane? By my count Manly were missing B Stewart, Cuthbo and Perry, whereas Brisbane were missing Hunt and Hodges. Two fantastic players granted, but Stewart and Perry are both rep players too, and given we were playing away at Suncorp i fail to see how he can be so bold. Am i forgetting someone?

Anyway the rest of the article was spot on - gutsy win yesterday, despite some diabolical kicking and a total lack of desire in the first half. A win at Brookie on sunday against Parra is CRUCIAL to kickstart a little momentum and bring some belief and desire back into the team.

I agree with the importance of a win against Parra, but watching the Fox replay yesterday I also noticed the commentators were always going on about who was missing from Brisbane and also all their stars backing up, did they forget how many we had backing up also…..

i agree with what gus said... manly are very perplexing this year... if we can stick it out and make the finals, and were lucky enough to have brett back, it will be totally different... but until then, im still not sure.. hopefully we can put a few on parra and boost the confidence more

I'd like to think I am a fairly patient person. Des must be at about 10 levels up from me. I know eventually most of selection decisions have won through. Some of them have taken a long time though. Sometimes I think he persists with the same team for too long. I've seen many coaches give a player a week off and seen them come back in form and hungry. In all honesty, there is a couple of players right now I know I would be doing that to if I was the coach. Even after the win.

Bani has loads of talent, however some of his defence is appauling. Perry (had the week off) has lost the spark he found last year. I honestly didn't think Josh had that in him last year... I'm concerned he is going to turn back into that Mr Joe Very Average again. Orford's hands and kicking game is ruining momentum.

Please Des. Get Orford and Bailey practice kicking a footy for the rest of the week. Give them some push ups and a Browny face slap for each kick that goes out of play.

Give Bani and Williams about 100 000 high balls to practice catching. Take Mattai out of drama classes for a few weeks and tell him to Chopper Reid his injuries. (He seriously is the toughest bugger I've seen in a long time to play through some of the stuff he does...)

Offer the props some sort of challenge out to the props to make the most metres.

Just a small improvement in all of these departments could yield some seriously easy, and desperately needed victories in the next 10 weeks.

There is still hope...

I agree with Bani, that missed tackle was appalling; Perry needs to find his inner mongrel again. Even though Robbo was ok at fullback, his position play still needs to improve, how I wish Snake makes a speedy recovery

i cant believe im saying this, but i can understand why robbo is at fullback over wolfman and bani... BOTH those guys are pathetic under the highball, wolfman esp - i take back whati said about giving them a chance at fb... i'd rather keep robbo or give hoppo a run..

Hoppa Jr could be a chance, if Robbo can sharpen his postitional play, he is ok, its a hard task for him standing in B Stewart shoes.

Bailey = Sh*t.

Bani = Sh*t.

The only problem is that there is no adequate replacement for either. You'd have to be a madman to move Lyon from the centres. Although I do feel he should touch the more a lot more as Bailey is proving to be total garbage imo.

There were big wraps about bailey, do you think its Bailey???, I tend to think its more OX, he is running a lot more sidewards this year, have you noticed how many passes have gone behind the backline??

Whilst Orford's execution has been terrible, at least he's trying. I can't say the same for Bailey.

From memory I saw him put up one bomb (which went dead or was caught in goal) and make 1-2 hitups. That's it.

Despite being memorable for the wrong reasons, at least you can recall Matty doing something.

Joking right?

Foran would easily slip into 5/8 and do better.

Not hard to do when they are standing so flat.

I'd take foran over bailey any day of the week.... we need ball players.. not a running 5/8th with no attacking flare at all.

Does anyone remember Jye Mullane?

Foran's inclusion is a purely academic discussion until at least round 20 considering how long Des persisted with that waste of space...

I'm a little confused here. Sure he is tearing it at centre... However, we won the premiership with him at 5/8. The other thing about moving him to 5/8 is he will see the ball even more. This was the problem we were always going to have with Bell leaving. We have two right centres and an 5/8 that is going to need some time before he will be at the top of his game in this team.
