2019 AFL tv and digital $397.4mill
2019 NRL tv and digital $348.5mill

Numbers dont lie, nearly a $50mil a year gap in the previous deal, so yeh your claim they were close is BS, not surprised the smell is so strong for you.
This thread was started to talk about tv deals

You should get the person who started it and rename the thread since you want to include non tv revenue in the figures

its media, or arent we counting 'streaming' as part of the tv deal? The Telstra deal for AFL back in the 2017 deal included streaming rights.

'Telstra will once again hold the rights for hand-held devices, AFL.com.au and the club digital network. Telstra will broadcast every match on mobile devices.'

streaming, or are we not counting streaming in the discussion?
The AFL deal under discussion included a portion of the Telstra revenue as a streaming deal. It explains why NRL was getting $25mill digital revenue and Telstra was paying AFL $50mill for same thing, a chunk of the $50mill was for streaming rights. So yes when counting tv deals we need to look at all media that is paying to show games. Pretty obvious Id have thought?

Yeh streaming is fair enough but most of it was for ownership of the afl websites

And obviously anything on the stadium going forward is pure bs

Impossible to know. Like I said NRL was generating $25mill from its websites and had costs to operate on that.
Cant see why AFL would pay $40mill+ for the same thing and have the costs to develop and run them?
Either AFL got a very good deal, NRL wasnt close to generating the same revenue as AFL in that area, or Telstra was paying more for streaming rights. Guess we'll never know.

So impossible to know but you’re happy aggregating the figures regardless lol

Here’s a tip when the afl choose to aggregate the figures it’s too hide the value of the tv deal because it’s not as good as they are claiming

Show me where in the 2019 accounts it has the Telstra $50 million - You cant because it's lumped into AFL Media and broadcasting....
See page 166
So if we deduct $50m from $397 we get $347m... I got you their i was catching my breath...No you didn't
a little fun and his a pommy too Ted and gang enjoy..back and forth..
So Telstra was about something called mobile phone streaming rights ... For something like $50 pa, But Foxtel put the hammer down on it's partner and no more rights.. Telstra being a obedient dog still stumped up the $50m p/a cash anyway.

You also dont know how much of Telstras part was contra

Telstras 50m is effectively FOR AFL Media. It was after all part of the media rights deal which includes replay, highlights and on demand rights for the AFL website network (for which it recieves all advertising revenue) and the AFL app.

The revised deal, which deepens the Telstra and AFL partnership that commenced in 2017 and runs through until 2024, expands the visual sponsorship elements such as on-field Telstra 5G signage, and continues the development of the AFL’s digital assets such as AFL.com, club websites and the AFL Official LIVE App. The updated sponsorship also deepens Telstra’s connections to AFL Clubs and extends the agreement with the AFL Players Association that engages all listed players as ambassadors for use in social marketing campaigns and other initiatives.

The big winner in the new agreement is the AFL-owned Marvel Stadium, which will see some of its network and technology infrastructure upgraded using a joint technology fund, including installing 5G connectivity, with the ambition of making it one of the world’s most advanced stadium and entertainment precincts.

Wasn't sure whether to post this here or not. MLR in the US announce a media deal with ESPN. Between this and the newly announced women's six tea professional league it seems to me that Rugby Union in the US is in one hell of a hurry to increase it public profile. I wonder how much of this is to do with the NRL's Vegas initiative 😉.

Union started making a big push into the USA in 2018 with the MLR and awarding the 2031 World Cup to the USA.

Like every sport they are chasing ‘just 1% of the American market’

Theres no mention in the article if ESPN+ are paying for the broadcast rights ? In previous seasons World Rugby has paid Fox Sports to broadcast games, similair to what the NBL did before they grew thier audience big enough for 10 to pay for broadcast rights.

Netflix considering bidding for f1 rights. Again this is a global "sport" and likely to mean squat for NRL.
Does it mean squat if companies like Amazon, Netflix, Disney and so on start getting the broadcast rights to the big international sports like F1, EPL, UFC, boxing etc. what does it leave for companies like DAZN who want to be a sports only streaming service, could make local sports like ours more valuable.

Yet another reason why we should not market our game as "Rugby"

So the Saudi`s have taken a stake in DAZN:

Also:

Nine`s largest shareholder and half-owner of St. George lllawarra rumoured to be planning to take majority ownership of Nine.

"The sale last week of WIN corporation’s northern NSW TV licences had long been in the works, but the timing of the divestment set industry tongues wagging.

"The sell-off of the licences to Network Ten – provided the deal meets the necessary regulatory requirements – will allow billionaire WIN owner Bruce Gordon, Nine’s largest shareholder, to further tighten his control of Nine by converting his equity swaps with Macquarie Group into shares.

"Free from the shackles of Australia’s media ownership laws, Mr Gordon, 96, would be legally entitled to lift his stake in Nine from 14.95 per cent to a dominant 25.1 per cent.

"It’s also likely that by lifting his stake in Nine, Mr Gordon would push for a second seat on the board – which at present has seven members, including interim CEO Matt Stanton.

"The chief executive of WIN Corporation, Andrew Lancaster, currently sits on the Nine board as Mr Gordon’s proxy.

"But with Nine not expected to appoint its next CEO until after the release of its half-yearly results on February 25, and with ongoing uncertainty about the length of existing chairwoman Catherine West’s tenure, there is speculation as to whether the time is right for Mr Lancaster to make a play for either of those roles to mirror Mr Gordon’s increased interest in the company.

"In a statement last week, Mr Lancaster said: “WIN’s strategic focus is on Nine and it no longer makes sense for us to own the 10 Northern NSW business. As an industry we should be looking to make the buying of advertising easier for our clients and this transaction should help do that.”

"It’s understood that top of the list of what the Gordons might keep with the Nine/9now TV brands is the Stan streaming business."

Interesting, what is the number one thing you need if you are going to own solely a FTA television and streaming business.

Interesting also;

"Meanwhile, the move by Paramount to buy the northern NSW licences means nearly all the three free-to-air TV proprietors control their destiny and ad sales across Australia."

So Paramount have Oz wide reach now, essential if you want to own a tier one sport.

Be interesting to see if 9/Stan go for it all if they would also be willing to just keep the fta if fox win the ptv? If 9/stan 10/paramount bid for it all and leave fox on their own who are only able to bid for ptv I wonder what the nrl does?
