Correct me if I'm wrong but we can not use Meriton with TPA because they were a former major sponsor, however there is nothing stopping Meriton from providing TPA to rival clubs players as that company hasn't sponsored those clubs...this just seems ludicrous.

The NRL didn't state that. I thought it was only using the major sponsor as a source of TPA's.

And this is why its wrong.

The NRL does NOT define the level of payment required to be a major sponsor.
Whether thats $500,000 or a million as far as Im aware has nothing to do with the NRL.

So, why not get a major sponsor in at a lower level and use that money for TPAs?
The NRL already gives clubs enough money to pay their salary cap and operate their coaching and back office staffs.

Its beyond me.....

If the club grant guarantees operational expenses as well as the cap, why do so many clubs run broke. We run off the smell of an oily rag and we always seem to be in financial trouble, despite having a high value jersey in terms of sponsorship. Our rehab bill alone would send a millionaire broke.

I dont know Charlatan, but there was a comment from the NRL a few weeks ago that with the upgraded grant if clubs cant remain solvent there is nothing more the NRL can do.

I suspect the League throws its hands up as well.

Additionally, remember that those clubs playing out of Homebush get decent cash for that as well.

Its not sustainable.
They compare themselves and their worth to American sports stars - whereas that market is 150 times the size of ours......

Sounds like it is survival of the fittest now. The NRL have borrowed money apparently (not sure who from, the ARLC?) so they're not propping anyone up now. It'll be an organic culling now. Those who don't survive go tits up, and the NRL get their mandate to expand.

I don't think they get it. I also think a lot of the TPA's and whatever that have propped up clubs like the Rorters are based on basically fans support. So rich people drum up support but it's not based on the profitability of the game.
