Plus the 30-man roster has been filled for 2019 with the signing of Patrick Kaufusi. With injuries & the JDB situation, we needed to add a forward. The options were limited with only the guarantee of a contract for 2019 due to JDB's uncertain playing future. Other teams had vacancies & also opened up spots with players being granted releases.

The 6 development players might be given a chance (including Steve Marsters at centre or wing). Just confirming that Marsters, Ford, Lovodua, Saab, Blacker & Hayden Lomax were those 6 that are eligible to play NRL after JUne 30.
The dragon situation with JDB and the wassscaly wabbits GREG INGLIS seems to go in different directions we get the rough end of the pineapple and the red carpet is rolled out for RUSSELL CROWE......

We could have easily signed a better forward on a 3 year deal. There are players leaving at the end of 2019 by their choice or by the club's choice. It is just a matter of juggling the cap to make it work for 2020 on. Instead Millward takes the easy way out and signs a player that is nowhere near a like for like with JDB.

Things will remain the same until a cleanout is done. We are in a Mess.

Another Mary signing.

We already have capable halves that are crying out for development however, and seems our coaching staff are unable to develop them to NRL level.

Kaufusi replaced JDB .. who is the 30th? Or are we still counting Jack?

Jai isn't a halfback. And what does he need to do to prove he's first grade quality? A lot. Quite a lot actually.

In regards to Kata.. You can't polish a turd. He's the most one dimensional centre in the NRL. I'd rather Aitken, and I hate Aitken.
We certainly don’t seem to be able to polish a turd, but Bellamy may have him looking something like this:

Field was told last week he wont be required for 2020. Riolo is on the lookout, but Cowboys are certainly interested.

What, really ? So Dufty , Field & Kerr told to go ? Part of the pathways program assumed good coaching would bring these guys on and whilst i understand these players haven't really kicked on ( like most of the others as well ) you got to compare our system in developing players compared to the top clubs. We really do need a clean out. Brian Smith , we have a 3 year job for you ?

It's incredible to think that we can be so inept at so many facets which are required to run a football club let alone a competitive one.
Holding onto players we know very little about until they are 22, 23 or even 24 and all the while other clubs bringing on 18 & 19 year olds who are kept or culled by the time they re 21.
To top it off we buy other clubs discarded juniors and players deemed not to be good enough to keep of which almost all turn out to be flops.
Then if that was not enough we continue to sign players who we incessantly talk up as being "good signings" because we have become ignorant as to what constitutes a "quality signing".
Not sure Brian Smith is the one but we certainly do need a new philosophy, mission statement, direction and commitment to excellence and it can't come soon enough.

It dont think its so much we dont know the players abilities until they are 22,23 or 24. I think its worse than that, I think we do know and keep them anyway because they are cheap juniors. The top performing clubs are a production line of juniors, they buy the best young and if they dont step up move them on ASAP and bring in the next one.

Its not so much they identify the juniors that make it, its more they cycle through them more effectively than us. Its a numbers game and, if you have enough juniors with potential moving through the club, you will jag a bigger proportion of the genuine stars.

How many big tall athletic raw boned second rowers do we have coming through the juniors? The successful clubs know the body type and physical attributes needed for each position and base a significant part of their junior recruitment around this. Some will develop the skills to go with the physique and others wont, the ones that dont are moved.

Really. What does Jai Field need to do to prove he is worthy of first grade. When will Ian Millward get the sack for incompetent signings or lack of. Kata signs with the storm hello we need centres what are you waiting for idiot.
Field has not shown a great ability to direct a team around the park when needed, Yes he is fast and his defence has definitely improved but speed is not the only ingredient needed if you are going to develop into a player with solid NRL credentials, especially at halfback. So far Field has proved, on a few occasions, that he can be a game breaker, but for now at least, he is not a game maker. We need the second more than the first. I agree that a centre probably neeeded to be our priority. Kata? Meh.

Yes some real merit in your observations.
We do keep some for far too long and IMO some of that comes from not blooding them when they are 18 or 19.
Your statement re body size etc is indeed succinct.

I agree about not blooding them early when the opportunity presents itself through injury etc.

Part of the problem is that though they were great juniors they aren't physically developed as much as a lot of other teams (read into that what you will) and the step to first grade is therefore a bit high. I dont know, but looking from the outside, it seems we do not pay as much attention to physical development of our juniors as some other clubs.

Nice delivery of a subtle message with which I agree 100%.

It will be interesting to see how our current group of SG Ball and JF players manoeuvre through our pathways and development. There are some very promising players who would be on the radar of a few clubs. The issue is those clubs would very likely have the top teir in 1st grade sooner than later, and those that are 2nd or even lower tier are culled very early. The Storm are a prime example of this and why they are successful. We are more likeky to keep those who show "promise" and wait until they are 22-24 before considering culling them. And some, like Aitken seem to be always "going to" deliver, one day.

I could have sworn we purchased Hunt to play half and Mc Innes to play hooker?
If they aren't to play in the positions we purchased them for then time to piss them off and get somebody better rather than putting more square pegs in round holes.
You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear so stop trying and be focussed on the right man (namely qualified and proven player) for each position.

I don't want to highjack this thread but imo Field does not cut it as a half. Dufty could be a good fullback just a little doubtfully under high ball and running it back. Well swap with a winger if they can catch a high one and let them charge it back eg Nene. Let Dufty blend into the backs in the middle when there is opportunity just like Tommy Turbo.
