Please don't view football as a danger....embrace both sports, like I do...and you can support the NQ A-League side when they come in in a couple of years time! :)
I'm happy enough watching soccer as my second sport. I just don't want it taking over and relegating Rugby League to the status of a minor sport. Most on here don't realise that is a distinct possibility.

And I doubt I could care enough about soccer to support a local team in the future.

In other news, I went along and watched the final of Qld Soccer's State Cup in Mareeba on the weekend. It was good to watch a higher level of soccer live, but only because there was no footy on. I skipped all the lead-up rounds in Cairns because they clashed with the 3N.

Youre an idiot, soccer has no chance in hell of overtaking league as the premier sport in this country, AFL on the other hand....

Soccer needs to deal with most clubs failing to meet budgets before it can go for domestic comp glory. Happy to watch the socceroos though, happy that they are killing the only think union has - the wallabies.

I still haven't really got into the A-League from a supporter and going to games point of view but I have watched some of it and the crowds have been pretty good and the standard of play better than the NSL obviously.

I embrace both sports but league is king for me domestically. But English Premier League kicks English Super League (Rugby League) ass any day of the week.

League is the premier sport in the country???

Soccer has a chance to break the big two if they get it right. Their junior participation urinates all over league and AFL, they have international comp credibility and they produce world class players. The challenge will be for them to get all clubs strong and get a decent TV contract. Never underestimate soccer to become the McDonalds of sport (crap product but appeals to the masses!)

And to attract consistently high mainstream interest in a sport where, at the top level, diving and draws are common and goalless matches a distinct possibility.

An uphill battle.

to me, soccer seems a lot like wearing latex and getting urinated on.
i don't understand it, but it's big in germany.

People keep saying there is not enough goals...and they hate goaless draws....thats why there is so much passion in soccer....caus a team has to play so hard to score a goal.

As a soccer fan, i would rather sit through 10 0-0 draws then watch my team lose 5-4.

U forgot to write, England, Spain, France, every other european country as well as, All of South america, not forgetting Mexico and costa rica in North America....and now the number 1 sport in South Korea and Japan, as well as making huge in roads in China.

As a National sport, Soccer sh*ts all over evey other. It will happen in australia its only a matter of time.

Says an obvious non-fan.

Actually, I'm exactly the type of person the A-League needs as a fan. Stacks of us here are.

I played soccer when I was a kid. I was obsessed with Sheffield Wednesday as an 8 year old. I still go out and watch my family and mates play every now and then. I'll no doubt join a sad old seniors team when I turn 35. I take a vague interest in the Pommy scores. I watch the Soccerroos pretty religiously.

Despite all that I could not give a rats about the A-League because there is no way that I'm going to give up time and money to watch a sub-standard competition in a sport that is marred at a professional level by diving and other theatrics.

Seems you are in a minority Nook. I have no love for soccer, in fact I rate it slightly ahead of Union in the most boring game in the world category but whatever they have got they bloody market it well! Its called the "world" game for a reason!

That's a standard line that's been used for many years.

No, it won't happen for many reasons not the least of which is that the quality of the A League is god-awful for the most part.

Anyone who sat through the Adelaide v NZ match the other night like I did should be able to sue the A League to get their 90 minutes back.

And its a weekly occurence.
