Cameron Smith will lead the Holden Kangaroos to the 2013 Rugby League World Cup with the Australian Rugby League Commission today announcing a 24-man tour squad that features three debutants and three members of the NRL Grand Final teams.

Holden Kangaroos coach Tim Sheens today joined ARLC Chairman, Mr John Grant, at Rugby League Central to announce a squad including players from 14 NRL clubs.

Sydney Roosters Premiership-winning back-rower Boyd Cordner, Sharks Dally M Prop of the Year Andrew Fifita and Canberra Raiders back-rower Josh Papalii are the uncapped players in the squad, which also features Cordner’s Premiership-winning team-mate Michael Jennings and Manly’s Clive Churchill Medal winner Daly Cherry-Evans.

The squad contains 14 players from the side that beat New Zealand 32-12 in the 2013 mid-year test at Bruce Stadium, with injury ruling out Justin Hodges, Kurt Gidley and Anthony Watmough.

Robbie Farah edged out Roosters hooker Jake Friend for the back-up hooker role.

The Kangaroos side squad has five players remaining from the team that lost the 2008 World Cup Final 34-20 to New Zealand at Suncorp Stadium; Billy Slater, Greg Inglis, Johnathan Thurston, Cameron Smith and Paul Gallen, while Brent Tate was also part of the 2008 squad.

Clubs represented:
Cowboys: 4 players.
Storm and Sharks: 3 players each.
Titans, Broncos and Roosters: 2 players each.
Sea Eagles, Wests Tigers, Knights, Eels, Rabbitohs, Dragons, Bulldogs, Raiders: 1 player each.

The squad is:

Well done to Corey Parker to get himself back into the team especially at his age. Hopefully he gets a starting spot this time and not just 30min against some minnow like his last tour.

Not a bad side. Even as a Queenslander and Cowboys supporters I think Papali and Tamou are lucky to be there. Thought Brenton Lawrence was head and shoulders above Tamou this year. Papali probably got the nod thanks to a couple of injuries but I can't see him getting a game.

This will probably be the top team IMO.

1. Billy Slater
2. Darius Boyd
3. Greg Inglis
4. Brent Tate/Michael Jennings
5. Hayne/Morris/Tate
6. Johnathon Thurston
7. Cooper Cronk
8. Matt Scott

13. Paul Gallen
14. Andrew Fifita

Usually the end of season rep games contain a few newcomers, who have nailed it in the finals. Usually the GF contains a decent chunk of the test squad. Yet, apart from Watmough - who could pull out due to injury - will we see any Kangaroos jerseys go to any players from last night?

I think DCE to replace Cronk is on the cards -yes Cronk won the Dally M. If the selectors DO dump Cronk for DCE, they wont dump JT for Maloney . Lyon continues his softcock attitude to rep footy. Jennings wont get a gig if Inglis plays centre, given the preference for the Morris brothers, but Hodges injury might open the door for him.

At best, Watmough, DCE and Jennings will be there. Maloney deserves to be. Cordner might get a spot in the squad. There was talk of Lawrence being a bolter, but not after last night. Glenn Stewart surely has lost his spot. Possibly only DCE, Jennings and Cordner will get a guernsey after last night.

DCE and Maloney SHOULD be the halves.

That said, half the Kiwi squad played last night.

Is this a first? For such a high quality game, surely not?

To be fair Watmough and Stewart were ruled out, so they'd have been there you'd think.

How bloody Darius Boyd has a mortgage on the wing position is beyond me though

It's because all the top quality players in that GF are Kiwis. Sign of the things to come in the NRL.
