If I can chip my 2 cents in, I completely agree with this post.
I have been using this in our forum (Sharks) in the Bird thread. People wanting to give him 700k because Manly are offering him it.
Bird isn't worth it, neither is Taupau. 700k is elite money. Neither are elite footballers.
Offering big money to players who are not worth it, gets you in cap strife. Hopefully you guys pull through. If players don't want to stay and play for the jersey, let them walk.
Absolutely. As I said I like the guy, he's very marketable and he is good at what he does but he is most effective behind a performing pack. We aren't renowned for having a pack that rolls over the opposition on a regular basis so Marty isn't used to his full ability.
Is paying him overs to sign a few kids on to memberships and a few jerseys worth the possible success he could cost us by paying him $200-300K over what he's worth? That money could go elsewhere to securing a linchpin player who could help us have a red hot tilt at the big prize.
I hazard a guess that winning premierships and being regularly competitive in finals is more effective at securing memberships and merchandising sales than having a big guy roll over the opposition and do push ups on the pitch for show. For all the exposure Benji gave us, we got three effective years out of the ten or eleven that he was here.
