They probably had to make a move. The bloke is clearly a good coach but just wasn't getting through to the players it would appear and the club needed a change in direction.

Whoever they hire will be on a hiding to nothing. They are certainties for the drop.

He's had a touch, though. 6 months into a three year contract and he gets sacked. That's two and a half years free money. Nice.

Had to happen. With P&R there's no room for patience in SL and another month of losses and Salford would be stuffed. Kear pulled Wakey out of the mire last year and there are plenty of other examples of a change of coach making an immediate difference. It's fuuny. The players don't get any better overnight so it just shows how much mental attitude and personalities impact on performances. Maybe signing a coach to a new, long term (3 years can be a ong time in coaching terms) deal is not such a great move, especially if he gets his cash no matter whether he succeeds or not.

This time last year Salford weren't far from the top of the table and now they're almost certain for the drop. Shows why P&R is no good. Be interesting to see who they bring in.

I thought the same thing last year about Wigan, but a new coach (not to mention a few new signings) got them out of trouble, don't write them off completely yet.

That said, I'll still have my money on them to be propping up the rest of the ladder :p

Serious? Wow, big move by Salford. Mind you he did alright for them last season...

It is the halfway point and a lot at stake. And as Jed said there's been some great escapes with coach swaps. But I can't see them getting out of this one unless they add to their squad and cover injuries at this stage?

They lost Dunemann and replaced him with Dorn. It's mostly the injuries, but Dunemann was very important to them and especially the way he played with Robinson and without him they have been hopeless.

They didn't play that well, they had a shocking second half of the season but no other teams really stepped up to the plate and took their play-off place.

As someone has said though, they have the same problem that Wigan had last year in that neither of their halves can direct the team around the park.

you cannot blame the halves even lockyer and johns would struggle with our current pack, we havent been on top of an opposition pack all season long once our big men start to perform the halfbacks will be fine also, Dorn isnt a good enough 6, he is at best a full back, get him there in place of fitzy while he is injured, and sign a good 6 with a good kicking game like gresque

I'd like to see Bomber McRae get the job - he's got a lot of experience in SL, and is familiar with the Red's players.

From the BBC:
McRae favourite for Salford role

Salford football director Steve Simms is keen to speak to Shaun McRae about the club's vacant head coach job.
Australian McRae, who has coached St Helens, Hull and NRL side South Sydney, has been linked with the Reds following the dismissal of Karl Harrison.

"It may not be what he is looking for but I would imagine he is going to think about it," said Simms.

Simms, who says between 20-25 applications have been received, will shortlist Reds assistant Jimmy Lowes.

Lowes, who was last week appointed as Great Britain's new trainer, was Harrison's right-hand man and says he wants the top job.

"Jimmy has applied and he will definitely be on the short list, he's made it clear he wants the job," said Simms.

"We're getting lots and lots of applications from all over the world. We have identified a first choice and second choice.

"But there is a process you have to go through. At the end of the day, it's going to be the chairman's decision.

If he's feeling up to it, he may come to our game against Huddersfield on Friday

Steve Simms on Shaun McRae

"It may well be that we need to get someone just to the end of the season to get us out of bother and appoint from there."

Salford, currently bottom of the Super League table, sacked Harrison on Tuesday after the 66-6 loss to Catalans last weekend.

McRae is out of work after quitting South Sydney last year but will arrive in England this week to take up work with Sky Sports.

"Shaun is a mate of mine, I spoke to him last week," said Simms.

"He was coming back to do some work with Sky and his wife Tina was coming back to see her family in St Helens. He doesn't even know the job's available.

"When he gets off the plane, he might think it's not what he wants. I'll see him on Friday regardless.

"If he's feeling up to it, he may come to our game against Huddersfield on Friday. I'd be surprised if he didn't look at it."

Former Cronulla and Penrith coach John Lang has also been linked with the position.

The 56-year-old coached the Australian Super League team for the 1997 series against Great Britain.

Simms will be in charge for the game with Huddersfield but is keen to appoint a new man as soon as he can.

Salford have just one win in the last seven games and are four points adrift at the bottom of the table.

And Simms said: "I think realistically we need to win six to seven games by the end of the season.

"We've just tried to simplify things this week. I've tried to take a lot of pressure away from the players."

The team will be without influential skipper Malcolm Alker for at least a month after he broke his hand in the Catalans defeat.

A great win for the Reds last night against, arguably, the form team of SL. Hopefully this will instill some much needed confidence into the players. Another win and the table from fourth down to twelfth is becoming very very congested. This is the sort of thing that the salary cap was brought in for.

And surely with such an even league, relegation should cease to exist.

Fair play to Salford - they were aided by a completely incompetant performance by the opposition but they stuck at it well in the second half.

If the Reds can kick on from here and pick up some more wins then the team that goes down can feel really hard done to. It may even break the team that goes down. I can envisage a record number of points for a relegated team.

In theory this is the last season where a team will be relegated (presuming the 12 in place in 2008 all qualify for 2009 franchises). As usual it will be a bit rough at the end for the team that goes down, unless they're a long way behind by that stage.

I'm pretty confident Cas isn't broken, so I dodn't expect this year's relegee (?) to be either. If they have their affairs in order (stadium, finances, development etc), and spend on holding players for the first half of next season, then I wouldn't be surprised to see them among the 2009 franchises when they are announced mid-next year.
