I had predicted this earlier in the year, but it looks like Cricket Australia is sending a message or something ...
Katich cut from contract list
Daniel Brettig
June 7, 2011
Simon Katich's Test career is effectively at an end after he was denied a Cricket Australia contract in the most significant change to the 25-man list of national team players for the 2011-12 season.

Mike Hussey, 36, and Katich, 35, were the two players thought in most danger of being culled as the national selectors maintain their push towards youth, and the strong form of New South Wales team-mates and fellow top order batsmen Phil Hughes and David Warner late in the domestic season arguably tipped the balance.

Katich played his last Test during the innings defeat in the second Ashes Test in Adelaide in December last year, limping out of international cricket with a torn Achilles tendon that cancelled him out of the equation for the remainder of the series.

Hussey's staunch efforts during the Ashes were followed up by a rapid recovery from a hamstring tear to play a walk-on role in the World Cup in March, and he also made a century against Bangladesh in Dhaka during Michael Clarke's first tour as captain in April.

Another most significant contractual decision is the inclusion of the 18-year-old NSW paceman Patrick Cummins in the 25-man list. Cummins, currently recuperating from a back strain that has kept him out of the Australia A tour of Zimbabwe, is the youngest player to be granted a contract since the system was introduced.

I rate Cummins highly but I don't think he deserves a contract just yet if people like Katich are missing out. People who have retired from Tests like Lee aren't deserving either IMO.

QFT!!! After the Ashes debacle all the selectors should have been punted. Instead Boon gets a plumb new job while the other 3 clowns are still there.

Nah right call. They don't make many but it's time to move on from Katich. Sad for him as I've been a fan for a very long time, but it's time to call it a day at test level.

As for 10 Blues, SOK and Copeland should both have one. If that means Cummins misses out this year then so be it, he's not ready for full time internationals yet, no need to rush the boy. Faulkner and Butterworth probably a little unlucky too.

Having only 25 contracts is maybe a bit silly with the very different selections for each of the three forms now. Could probably sensibly have another 5.

Couldn't agree more re Lee. The composition of this 25 is a bit odd and would have to be the worst in quite some time

How the hell is Brett Lee still on a contract?!

With the world cup done and dusted I would have thought its time to move on in the pace department.

feel for the Kat , great last five years. He should be commended on how he came back to test cricket. To do what he did after being unfairly dumped in the first place is really something special.

That said its probably a good time to move on. If only ponting would do the same.

Keep in mind that just because a player doesn't have a Cricket Australia contract it doesn't mean they can't be picked for Australia

but if he's had one for a long time and now doesn't, chances are he won't be.

How they hell Does Patrick Cummins get a contract?? Absolute debacle. Sure he is a super talent but what is he 18?? I tend to agree on the Katich call, it is harsh and he has been a great servant but we can't continue to carry Punter, Hussey and katich in our side.
