Katich cut from contract list

Good decision by the selectors for once

What would have been the point of having three batsman 35 & over in a "rebuilding" side? There's still one too many, either Ponting or Hussey should go as well.

Katich has a dismal Ashes record (avg 30), he wasn't going to help Australia regain the urn so now it's time to bring in someone who can

Since May 2008, when Katich was recalled

MHussey played 4 extra tests, 2460 runs @39.07, 5 100's and 16 50's.

Ponting 3 extra tests for 2590 runs @40.42, 5 centuries and 17 50's

Katich hit just under 2930 runs @50.5, with 8 tons and a further 17 scores of 50+

If we go more recently, since the start of the 2009 summer

Ponting has just over 1000 runs @36.25, with one 100 and 8 50's (3 extra tests)

Hussey 1300 runs @47.60 (4 extra tests) 3 tons 8 50's - three good tests in the Ashes and a ton in a match that was thrown.

Katich 1200 runs @49.90, 2 tons and 9 50's, having played the last 4 tests with first a broken thumb and then on one leg.

In that more recent period record is marginally better than Katich thats about it.

Since his achilles injury Katich hit 90something against the Taswegians in the shield final, showing he's certainly fit and capable (probably better than his last few matches).

So logically, Katich is the member of the senior trio to be cut off. Having been far better than his peers in his age group. He must be furious he isnt marketable enough to be able to survive severe decline.

This is a ****ed decision. He's exactly the type of player we need in the side the next 1 or two years, has performed supurbly over some period of time but the first chance they get they cast him aside

Averaged 42 or so last england tour, was batting on one leg this series and still outperformed Ponting.

Katich should have been the last of the three to go on recent record, yet he's the first. Typical of an organisation that long ago lost its way, caring more about marketing and twenty20 bullshit than the health of the test side.

Cummins shouldnt have got a spot yet, Copeland has been brilliant for two years yet doesnt get one. Brett Lee should sub out for O'Keefe.

Cummins would be lucky to make our first class side (in fact, at full strength, he wouldnt come close, Copeland Bollinger Cameron Hazlewood I'd have ahead), bright prospect but lets not rush him ffs.

Selection panel is a joke

I think that's the problem - logic means nothing to the dunces in charge. I do however think this was always going to happen, the moment he got injured during the ashes I knew he had played his last test. If Hussey hadn't scored more than the rest of Australia (bar Watson) combined during the Ashes he would never have been called into the world cup squad and he would be without a contract too right now

How does Cameron White still have a contract? #-o
So glad to hear someone other than me question that. I have thought he was a dud player for quite some time, but others will defend him and he even captained Australia during the Summer. I really don't see what he adds to the team

Mate don't disagree with any of that. It'd be pretty easy to look up my old posts and show where I consistently said Hussey shouldn't have gotten the arse before the ashes last summer. But as he didn't and is now a lock for probably this summer at least (not agreeing with it, just being realistic) and they don't have the stones to say to Ricky it's time to go old champ then Kat has to go. He should have played a heap more tests and his dropping for Symonds was a joke, but we can't try and make up for that now. Probably should have been Hussey and probably should have been 12 months ago, but life sucks.

And yes in a full strength Blues side Cummins doesn't get a game except maybe at 20-20 which we don't play as the Blues any more. He's got all the makings of an exceptional player, but lets not see how soon we can induce stress fractures in the kid eh?

Happy to see Pattinson's name there though.

I dont mind the notion of players being moved on when they are too old, I just think they are moving the wrong one on, and alot of it comes back to image to me, something CA is far too concerned about.

OK the reports this morning are that Hughes and Watson were given the opening spots so they can build a combination for the next Ashes.

Who cares about the next bloody Ashes?!

There is series AWAY to Sri Lanka and South Africa this year as well as the visit from India. Surely these 3 series should be the focus, not something in 2 years time!

So Australian cricket is so strong that we can sack blokes who average nearly 50 in Test cricket (over a period of over 50 Tests)?

Good to know.

Bring back the Kat, and sack Hildud, now!

Definitely the right call. He's been a great servant to Australian cricket but it was time to move on.

Why is it time to move on Evenflow?

I'd like to hear one good reason. His age is NOT a valid reason. Given that of the 'old blokes' he has been the most consistent for some time, I'm curious as to how some 'old blokes' survive but Katich is cut?

 @ Cameron White. Awful player.

Keep in mind that just because a player doesn't have a Cricket Australia contract it doesn't mean they can't be picked for Australia

Hilditch made the call and rang Kat to tell him.

He said the future is Hughes and Sunshine for the next ashes series so its time to move on.

That tells me Kat has been dropped and is no chance.

He never explained why he kept Hussy, probably the fact that he plays all 3 versions of the game helped.

I dont buy this age thing, especially when Kat and Sunshine have been by far and away our two most consistant batsmen. After all the contracts are a yearly thing, not set in stone for 3 or 5 years.

But I do wonder what sort of influence Michael Clarke had on the selections of this 25 man squad?

Quite suprised not to see Marcus North on the list :D

my thoughts exactly, if you're good enough you're young enough

they kicked Hughes out with an average of 55 for no reason at all, now they put him back in and kick Kat out for no reason other than he is old despite the fact that he is our best opener, although not as old as Hussey

no wonder our players are confused

Being one of Rickys Pets helped him as well.
