Kearney is not the problem

Why do so many people fail to realize that the forward pack competed fine last season?

Some of the issues they have come across this season:
i. Hindmarsh playing at prop (bad idea)
ii. MoiMoi playing out wide (bad idea)
iii. too many rookies
iv. lack of go-forward at certain periods (Hindy's prop stints)
v. Poor dummy half service (MK might be one of the best defensive hookers in the game, but his service is slow and awkward both to our forwards, and to our halves)
vi. Regression in the wrestle (defensive pressure is easier to maintain when they don't get quick play the balls all the time - we've been worse in that area than last year)

Some of those issues aren't down to ability, they're simply not being told what to do, or being put in scenarios where they can't do what they need to do.

But how do you know that they were not being told??

Like I said before, it's all academic now, but you can't assume that Kearney didn't instruct whatever you think was correct way.

The whole point of "too many rookies" is to blood them as a part of rebuilding. Criticise SK for anything and everything but please, he was rebuiding the squad.

Anyhow, I am looking forward for 2013. I may be in minority here but we have an exciting and youthful team. All we need is a bit of luck (coaches in any level will tell you that luck is significant - SK did not have much ;-)).

That's true, but that has been our problem for years, except for about 12 weeks in '09. That's not solely a Kearney issue, but it baffles me why it hasn't been addressed under his leadership.

Suity
- A coach can work on it during training but it doesn't get excuted in the match.

- It is a collective weakness and a coach has to decide to whether to improve it now or address other areas. He prioritise these areas according to his structure and coaching philosophy - these things take time.

Or
- SK was ineffectual in trying to change collective attitude.

You could well be right. But then the question needs to be raised as to whether Steven K communicated his message effectively. If he didn't, well then he failed in his role.

Nobody knows if they were being told. The evidence we're presented with is that they didn't do it.
You'd think learning to communicate effectively is essential to the job surely...

Try coaching a U16s. You communicate what you want from players, you practice in training. In the match, the players sometimes do what you instruct them, other times don't. The coach really does not have much control once the game starts. This might sound absurd but it's a fact.

You could be right. SK might have been ineffectual with communication. But more probable explanation in regards to our indiscipline this year, is that the roster is young and relatively inexperienced.

Injuries, new signings not gelling quickly, and forward pack not firing were among many other reasons why we were f*&%ed.

Agree.

But there are also many other reasons why we failed as a collective in 2012.

This doesn't explain why we also fail to dominate on the defensive side of the ball. We either let teams get a roll-on or give away penalties for holding down.

A better explanation is our tight forwards just aren't strong or aggressive enough.

This argument is old and starting to wear thin.

The dogs last week against us only managed 9 missed tackles, throughout the entire 80 mins. That would have to be some record, ever since stats were first recorded.

You cannot tell me that the dogs defense is that good, to only allow only 9 missed tackles.

What that stat does indicate, is that our attack is inept, 1 dimensional and maybe even non existent.

For our attack to be more effective, and allow the quicker play the balls, the defensive line has to be tested, put on the back foot and be made to second guess. Not play this 1 out shit, we have dished up all year, enabling the opposition to murder us in the ruck.

Me too mate.

All the game time given to rookies and youngsters this year will serve us well next year. Another off season of physical development for the youngsters and we'll be firing.

Exciting times.

I third that, I reckon by just fixing our defence ( eg more passion, more commitment from the players) and just getting some structured moves for when we are attacking the oppositions try line we would be big improvers. And this does not include other improvements such as signing of more players , improving our ability to wrestle, better go forward, forwards using the ball better etc

That's because you're ignoring the supporting argument relating to the other side of the ball (i.e. defence).

Under the same coach we conceded less points than four other teams last year - we conceded 22.4 points per game.

This year (with the same coach and mostly the same pack) we are conceding 28.1, and on very few tackles in a defensive set are we able to present a set defensive line because teams are just rolling straight through us. Whatever our forwards were doing last year to slow teams down they're not doing this year, and the best explanation is old age.

If old age is the explanation for our lack of ruck dominance in defence, then it is also a major factor in our lack of dominance in attack. Personally, I see us with plenty of supporting runners in attack, but they're doing no good because guys like Fui, Hindy and Poore aren't drawing four defenders like they used to.

Well, SK was the coach for the Melbourne game.....

We also lost that piece of luggage called 'JRod' or something after the Melbourne game. Maybe it was his fault too.

Just sayin....

yep. people want to point the finger at kearney after two wins but kearney was still in charge for a pretty damn good performance against storm.

ok sure he may not have been the right person to get the team prep'd right consistently on game day but then i also ask why it took the players wanting to send sk out on a winning note to actually lift. our crap performances under sk were in part his fault but not entirely.

i stand by my comments a few weeks back that he is probably a great 2ic but probably not suited to run the show.
