NZRL BOARD REAFFIRMS KEMBLE AS KIWI COACH FOR WORLD CUP

The New Zealand Rugby League has reaffirmed Gary Kemble as Kiwi coach through to the end of the World Cup in Australia next year.

The NZRL board today discussed Kemble’s position in a review of the Kiwis’ end of season international programme against Australia, Great Britain and France.

“Gary has the board’s support to continue as coach through to the World Cup, as he was contracted to do when he was appointed,” said chairman Ray Haffenden.

“In beginning our review of the tour today, our focus was on the head coach’s job and, after considering reports, we have stayed with the status quo.”

Former Kiwi fullback Kemble was appointed in mid-August only eight weeks before his first test as coach against Australia in Wellington on October 14.

“The test against Australia and the following tour to Britain and France provided a difficult assignment for everyone involved,” said Kemble.

“While results didn’t go the way we hoped, I have always wanted to continue in the role. There’s much work to be done and I’m confident the Kiwis will perform well in next year’s Centenary Test against Australia and then in the World Cup.”

Kemble said he welcomed the board’s support to enable him to complete his contract.

Well, ultimately I may not completely agree but I still support the Kiwi team through and through. I wish the guy and the team all the best for the next year

I wonder if the players share the same thoughts as are being expressed on this forum, especially after Lowie put the boot in?
There is some truth in Lowie's comments but it is the NZRL's 1st task - coach and management - to motivate the Kiwi team, so that they 'would cut their fingers off to play for New Zealand'.

Kiwis blame players, not coachArticle from: Font size: Decrease Increase Email article: Email Print article: Print Submit comment: Submit comment By Steve Mascord

December 21, 2007 12:00am, Daily Telegraph

DIRECTOR of football Graham Lowe has accused New Zealand players of not caring enough about their defeats and yesterday backed coach Gary Kemble to keep his job.

The NZRL board will meet in Auckland this morning to discuss a dismal year of Test results against Australia and Great Britain and consider recommendations over whether Kemble should serve out the remaining 12 months of his contract.

The recent resignation of chairman Andrew Chalmers is thought to have improved Kemble's odds of staying on.

"The guy shouldn't be crucified," an outspoken Lowe told The Daily Telegraph.

"It appeared to me that to some of them (players), it didn't matter enough that they lost.

"I come from an era where players would cut their fingers off to play for New Zealand and unfortunately Gary has come into an era where some players don't think that way.

"I'm not looking for excuses but I think to a certain extent he was handed a poisoned chalice.

"There are some more experienced players who should look at themselves in the mirror and ring Gary up and say, 'I let you down'. It requires a period of honesty."

Kemble's own report along with those from on-tour business manager Pat Carthy and NZRL general manager Peter Cordtz - who has interviewed players and other staff - will be tabled.

Lowe hedged his bets on the question of whether Brisbane's Wayne Bennett should be given a role with the Kiwis.

"I think Wayne would be absolutely outstanding for the game in New Zealand," Lowe said.

"But I don't think it should be at the expense of Gary."

Sydney-based Gary Freeman was sacked after losing just one Test on tour in 2002 but said he had no strong view one way or another on Kemble's fate.

"Whatever the decision, it would be nice if they gave a reason," Freeman said.

"That would be a change.

"But I will say I have the utmost respect and faith for the new chairman, Ray Haffenden."

Go Samoa - perhaps a little tongue in cheek - but I do not have a great feeling about the Kiwis' chances.

Have players such as SBW, Fa'alogo etc confirmed that they will play for the Kiwis?? Samoa, particularly senior players such as Nigel Vagana, should make enquires.

At the last WC Samoa were very close to getting a number of high profile Kiwi players.

It is our passion for the Kiwis that has us questioning certain decisions that are made at times by the NZRL.

I'll always continue to support the Kiwis just as I have done since I watched them first play live @ Carlaw Park around 1975.

Lol...forum fight, forum fight!!!!

As I mentioned, I don't really agree with the reappointment, and I haven't decided yet about Lowie in his role, whether it be blessing or curse...and I have a really bad feeling that the Kiwis will be up against it next year (While Samoa may have the passion we haven't seen from the Kiwis of late).
That said, I will always support the team through and through regardless of what I think about the NZRL heiracy, and if they prove us wrong, well I guess we'll all be stoked

The not being motivated thing... firstly, I'm sorry that is a cop out. Any manager is responsible for providing the leadership to his unit to see the goals, and measure and control each indvidual to ensure they are constantly moving forward towards those goals. That's Kembles shortcoming. That's also a selectorial short coming of not understanding individual players enough and picking a side that was not prepared to go away.

The whole thing started before the squad got selected. I mean heck, you had Fuifui Moimoi stating he was waiting to see whether Australia wanted him before picking New Zealand. Likewise Taniela Tuiaki saying he was waiting to see where Fuifui went before making a decision. I'm sorry, but as a New Zealander I found that as a real shot in the guts. Either you are a New Zealander, or not. Particularly in reference to Australia, they've been our mortal enemy for years in many fields. That right there starts a culture of a lack of pride, you don't take this jersey as second best or an alternative option. Preferably in the future I would like to see neither Tuaiki or Moimoi selected for New Zealand. Their attitudes prior to squad collection only works against any coaching motivational policy.

It is as if all along we have settled for second best, from top to bottom. It's high time for some progessive changes.

kemble doesnt have the confidence of management
he doesnt have the confidence of the captain, or the players....

why should he have ours ?

often 'blind faith' will see you walk off a clifftop.

BRING BACK BLUEY !! or D.A.

Could not agree more with that, neither should be selected with their attitude towards the jersey they should be holding with pride. I wonder if they weren't picked whether Aussie could pull a 'Tony Carroll' of some sort and wangle it soas to make them Aussie eligable:lol:

Hoe, I,m not knocking you but if its wrong, then its wrong.

the more people who say its wrong the better imo, ftr, i have no problems with Kemble as a player or person. his heart is with the game but I doubt his coaching ability at the highest level. Now I know sfa about coaching the national team but i can see results and hear opinions which form my opinions.

my opinion is that Gary Kemble is the wrong person to take us into the World Cup, nothing personal, he just hasnt got what it takes. Bluey did.
