Out of my close mates of about 20
I'd say there is maybe 2 or 3 that wouldn't touch it
7 that are bit on the fence, but are fairly easily swayed
The rest are like f**k yeah lets do this shit.

....and we are in all different types of jobs and live in different towns

Keogh was one of the unlucky ones to get caught
Stupid - yes
But hardly the only person who has a bit of a go at it.

Still - he knew the ramifications.

I wonder what some of them would say if they read this. Sure some would know potentially what it's doing to their body but I bet others wouldn't.

IT had been a long day for Cronulla Sharks chairman Damian Keogh on his favourite restaurant strip.

Just hours before standing down from the NRL club on Friday night, Keogh had lunch with three acquaintances at a Kingsleys Australian Steakhouse on the Woolloomooloo Wharf frequented by Sydney’s rich and famous.

As CEO of cinema company Hoyts and a multi-millionaire, he often dined there with his business connections.

On Friday evening he chose to have more drinks at the nearby Tilbury Hotel and then the Bells Hotel.

Shortly before 8pm five police officers did a routine walk through the pub with drug dogs. Keogh, according to police sources, was spotted acting suspiciously.

Damien Keogh has been credited with saving the Sharks from near bankruptcy.
He was searched and officers allegedly found a small plastic resealable bag of a substance believed to be cocaine.

He was charged with possessing a prohibited drug and issued with a future court attendance notice to appear at Downing Centre Local Court in June.

Later that night, Keogh informed Cronulla Sharks directors he would stand down immediately. He said yesterday he could not comment “for legal reasons”.

Keogh is credited with saving the Sharks from near bankruptcy three years ago, fighting back to win last year’s NRL premiership. To ease the club’s cash flow problems he even tipped in $1.5 million of his own money.

Lyall Gorman addresses the media following news of Damian Keogh’s drugs charge.
He is highly respected across the game and was recently appointed by the Sydney clubs to head negotiations with out-of-town clubs to get a united position on future funding from the NRL.

Keogh is a father of four and had to break the news to his family on Saturday. He likes a good time and plays in a band Shake N Bake at venues in the Sutherland Shire.

NRL CEO Todd Greenberg said he was disappointed because “he’s done such a good job for the club”. He denied there was a widespread cocaine problem in the game.

“All of society is involved in a battle with illicit drugs,” Greenberg said. “We’ve done a huge amount of work across drug education. I don’t subscribe to talk there is a huge problem in rugby league.”

Sharks CEO Lyall Gorman said: “It’s a very disappointing day for our club. It’s one we’re trying to work through as a club and right now we’re giving Damian the time to address the allegations.”

Bet his heart skipped a few beats when he saw those drug dogs.

Millions of tax payers dollars spent on the war against drugs and yet the stuff is everywhere, its time to legalize it.

On ya bike Damo......would rather it be him than a high profile player. Pretty geniused to risk a couple of high paying and high profile gigs by carrying the shit on him in a city pub. Was never going to be drug tested but we've all seen the drug dogs around town.

All very true Spirit.

Excessive drinking long term is just as bad as taking drugs.

Excessive gambling for any amount of time is bad.

However I think those two things generally done in moderation and sensibly are not bad.

The thing is many can argue that in most cases they are not approached that way.

Addictions generally are not good.

Many can argue that drug taking in moderation is not an issue. But drugs generally aren't that way designed. They are designed that you do get addicted and dependant and it is a very expensive addiction that leads to a habit that more often than not is not sustainable long term.

A reasonable point. I would include the conditional argument that gambling, smoking, etc are physiologically and psychologically the same as drugs (narcotics, barbiturates, etc) in that they are all 'designed' for enjoyment, not to impart moderation. Some people can moderate. Some can't. No intrinsic moral superiority in alcohol, only legal. (Which is, of course, a significant factor).

Bad luck Damian Keogh Caught out on a f**king ridiculous rookie error. Talk about screwing the pooch, he must be kicking himself. As should we. For being such an idiot getting caught. But no doubt our club owes you so much and should remember your legacy positively and with gratitude.

That argument hasn't stopped people consuming dairy, red meat, fast food, booze, etc.

Yeah you're right.

Cigarettes are legal.

They put the most graphic images on the packets of cigs.

They cost a bomb to buy.

Out of all my Uncles I have lost three.

One before he turned 50. One in his late 50's and one in his mid 60's.

Two from lung cancer and one from throat cancer.

Those three were pack a day smokers.

All my other Uncles don't smoke or did in their younger days but have quit except one. He has problems with his eye sight which Doctors say is due to smoking but he's alive so he's bucked the trend of Cigs ending his life early.

But they are all still living today.

Having said all that about 1/3 of my cousins smoke.

Despite what effects of smoking they have seen with their family and knowledge of effects of smoking.

That's a lot of the mind set of today's society. Live hard, party hard, deny information they read, ignore what they see but then mourn the early death of loved ones as being "unlucky" not to live a long life.

None of them are iliegal SOL.

Agree he's a fool for getting caught on the wrong side of the law being in a position of such responsibility, profile and reward. totally let himself down and the club. Just emphasising the point that legality does not equate directly to ethics and morality.

For example, human slavery was previously legal in many nations, including ours. Many US citizens received criminal convictions for aiding and abetting the escape of slaves. Other relevant examples from the USA include the prohibition of alcohol last century and the current trend towards decriminalisation of marijuana.

So they restaurant apparently frequented by the rich and famous of Sydney and Keogh only one caught, that sounds like someone had a vendetta.

I would have had gut feel that the dogs could have had field day there

I don't believe there is a vendetta. Targetted responses to intelligence that has been gathered for some time is my bet.

They wouldn't give a shit

Some are in their fifties
They go harder for longer than dudes half their age.

2 of them are brothers and I have had people outside our circle comment on how much they can drink

Freaking experts
They don't even look that pissed either

Chemical sharpening does that

Simple as that.

Greenburg has his head in the sand if he doesn't think drugs are rife in the NRL.
