Kevin Nash Meltdown

I Thought this deserved its own thread.
Grantland.com has a new article online featuring quotes from Kevin Nash that is certain to ruffle some feathers. Below are the highlights (or lowlights depending on how you look at them):
What he considers the end of the wrestling business:
“When Benoit and Guerrero hugged [at the end of WrestleMania XX], that was the end of the business,” he says. “Has business been the same since that WrestleMania? Has it come close to the Austin era? Has it come close to the nWo or the Hogan era? You put two f—ing guys that were great workers that were the same height as the f—ing referees, and I’m sorry, man. Are you going to watch a porno movie with a guy with a three-inch d–k? Even if you’re not gay, you will not watch a porno movie with a guy with a three-inch d–k. That’s not the standard in porno films. So you put a 5-foot-7 guy as your world champion.”
Criticism of CM Punk & Daniel Bryan:
“They are not bigger than life,” he says. “I bet they could both walk through airports and not be noticed unless they have a gimmick shirt on and the belt.”

WTF? Mid life crisis for Kevin me thinks. Add a bit of jealousy to the mix and you get the above comments.

First of all the Benoit/Guerrero moment was one of the more successful and memorable moments since the attitude era. Forgetting the circumstances of the Benoit death, both were deserving champions at the time and put on matches night in night out that were better than anything Nash ever did. His porn movie analogy is just ridiculous and I doubt he was sober when he said that.

Additionally the very era he is referring to as the best was in part destroyed by himself. He was instrumental in the decline of WCW, which lead to a monopoly and an environment where the WWF/E could do what they want.

His comments re: Bryan and Punk reek of jealousy but he does have a valid point. However they are less recognisable because wrestling isn’t in the mainstream at the moment and the only reason Kevin was flocked by fans back in the day is because he was fortunate enough to get over with a limited skill set in a wrestling boom period and one of the most successful wrestling storylines ever.

Who says wrestlers have to be big? CM Punk has made himself a better champion then Mark Henry and Alberto Del Rio did combined!

I wonder what one of the pioneers of small wrestlers making it as a main eventer and one of nash' best friends, Shawn Michaels thinks of those comments?

Kevin Nash is delrious. He was a nuffy wrestler who only had height and size going for him. Eddie and Chris might not have been huge in size, but they knew how to work a match and were highly entertaining.
Nash is suffering delusions of grandeur

Ahh yes, push the big guys, forget the smaller, obviously more talented, more entertaining guys. Also known as the WCW business model. Tell me, how'd that work out Kevin?

Sad to see one of my favourite wreslters growing up fall to these lows. Him and Hall were my fav tag team back in the 90's. Now look at them.

His desperate attempt to stay in the spotlight. He is done.

Eh, 3 bottles of wine will lead to those sort of comments.

As Jericho pointed out, Nash really shouldn't criticise others for not being draws. Not only was '95 a bust but his face run in '99 was the beginning of the end for WCW.

However, there's some truth to it. Benoit & Punk weren't really draws & will never be the megastars of Hogan, Austin, Sammartino etc. Heck, his good friend Shawn Michaels was also a terrible draw for the WWE. So I agree that there are more important variables than just in-ring performance to consider when talking about good draws.

It was actually a pretty good article. A shame that people are taking the bait.

I think Nash has a point with some of it. Wrestling just hasn't been the same since after WMXX. Had some cool flashes after it, but nothing consistently good.

He's hardly having a meltdown, didn't he recently challenge Warrior to a cage fight over twitter? That's having a meltdown. He's on the way back up.

I agree, hence why I can't watch it anymore. Nothing has come close to the attitude era and I doubt it ever will (not necessarily because of what Nash is alluding to, but at least partially).

When I first read the headline I thought his point was exactly that and he was using WMXX as an approx time when wrestling started to go downhill. However, he is clearly insinuating that the fact those two were champions was what started the current decline of wrestling. What started it was the demise of WCW and the lack of an alternative to WWE/F and we all know what Nash?s part in that was.

No competition = sub poor product.

Lets be realistic, TNA hasnt really kicked off yet and WWE is still the dominant company. Wrestling is in the current state because the old merkins in WCW couldnt book, overpaid wrestlers and wasted talent.

I don't think Nash is against small guys in main events, rather he's against them fighting each other in main events.

He has a theory that you need a david and a goliath, not two davids.

In some respect I agree.

But as a whole I can't agree with him enirely. Some great rivalries have been had, even from the era he speaks of, between guys of a similar height.

Nash was always crap, I never saw or understood the hype about him. He always appeared clumsy and lazy in the ring to me. You wouldn't book him for a long fight because people would get bored with him.

Because Benoit was a close friend of Jericho's and has made a point of referencing him.

Read his second book.
