Kimmorley willing to take pay cut
21st May 2007, 17:45 WST
Cronulla halfback Brett Kimmorley says he is willing to take a pay cut to remain at the NRL club after the Sharks took a two-year offer off the table on Monday.
Kimmorley and his manager George Mimis met with Sharks coach Ricky Stuart on Monday where it was hoped the former NSW and Test halfback would be able to come to some sort of agreement on his future at the club.
The Sharks had offered the Cronulla skipper a new two-year deal three weeks ago but Kimmorley had been seeking an extra year.
Now that offer has expired, but Kimmorley said he was still keen on remaining a Shark.
"I'm obviously prepared to take a significant pay cut from what I am on now," Kimmorley told the Nine Network.
"I've been on a good deal for a few years and obviously I'm a bit older now. I'm happy to take a pay cut.
"Now that George is home from England we can probably try and work out a few things and solve it all before it becomes a bit too stressful for me."
Kimmorley and Stuart had a well-publicised falling out following Kimmorley's dumping from the NSW side in 2005 when Stuart was coach.
But both claim their differences are in the past, Kimmorley admitting he had enjoyed something of a renaissance under Stuart in 2007.
"My footy is a lot better," he said.
"I've been really enjoying the challenges that Ricky has thrown at us about playing good every week and being consistent and he and I seem to get on very well."
The Sharks have minimal funds left under the salary cap for next season with the re-signing of five-eighth Adam Dykes - who is also managed by Mimis - all but a done deal.
Sharks chief executive Greg Pierce admitted the club could struggle to hold onto both Dykes and Kimmorley.
"Not probably on what they're on at the moment because we've just re-signed a lot of our good young players which is important to do and that makes it difficult," Pierce said.
"A lot of those guys contracts have been upgraded so it makes it difficult at the other end of the cap.
"Ricky knows what he wants and Ricky is the one coaching the players and I'm sure the meeting today will hopefully solve some issues.
"There's still money there to sign some players but whether we can sign both of them on what they're currently on is probably unlikely."
If Kimmorley doesn't stay with the Sharks, there are believed to be at least four other NRL clubs keen on securing the 30-year-old playmaker as well as some interest from English Super League clubs.
