Kimmorley willing to take pay cut

21st May 2007, 17:45 WST

Cronulla halfback Brett Kimmorley says he is willing to take a pay cut to remain at the NRL club after the Sharks took a two-year offer off the table on Monday.
Kimmorley and his manager George Mimis met with Sharks coach Ricky Stuart on Monday where it was hoped the former NSW and Test halfback would be able to come to some sort of agreement on his future at the club.
The Sharks had offered the Cronulla skipper a new two-year deal three weeks ago but Kimmorley had been seeking an extra year.
Now that offer has expired, but Kimmorley said he was still keen on remaining a Shark.
"I'm obviously prepared to take a significant pay cut from what I am on now," Kimmorley told the Nine Network.
"I've been on a good deal for a few years and obviously I'm a bit older now. I'm happy to take a pay cut.
"Now that George is home from England we can probably try and work out a few things and solve it all before it becomes a bit too stressful for me."
Kimmorley and Stuart had a well-publicised falling out following Kimmorley's dumping from the NSW side in 2005 when Stuart was coach.
But both claim their differences are in the past, Kimmorley admitting he had enjoyed something of a renaissance under Stuart in 2007.
"My footy is a lot better," he said.
"I've been really enjoying the challenges that Ricky has thrown at us about playing good every week and being consistent and he and I seem to get on very well."
The Sharks have minimal funds left under the salary cap for next season with the re-signing of five-eighth Adam Dykes - who is also managed by Mimis - all but a done deal.
Sharks chief executive Greg Pierce admitted the club could struggle to hold onto both Dykes and Kimmorley.
"Not probably on what they're on at the moment because we've just re-signed a lot of our good young players which is important to do and that makes it difficult," Pierce said.
"A lot of those guys contracts have been upgraded so it makes it difficult at the other end of the cap.
"Ricky knows what he wants and Ricky is the one coaching the players and I'm sure the meeting today will hopefully solve some issues.
"There's still money there to sign some players but whether we can sign both of them on what they're currently on is probably unlikely."
If Kimmorley doesn't stay with the Sharks, there are believed to be at least four other NRL clubs keen on securing the 30-year-old playmaker as well as some interest from English Super League clubs.

i know there are other threads but i thought this was important, he wants to stay but he and his manager might have cost him a contract with the sharks.

Gotta feel for the little bloke.
Nice bloke Kickporly - but he is gone.
Pierce distances himself from the fact and puts it back onto the Stickster.

Embarrassing for the bloke but at the end of the day he's been extremely well paid for leaving us without a trophy.
That's right, he won't be in first grade when captain Thommo lifts the trophy this Spring.

For what it is worth, I would rather Noddy than Dykes.

I don't rate either of them ahead of the other in their worth to the club, they are both average in today's game.

Although, a blind man could see that Dykes is more creative and expansive.

However, I feel that Kimmorley will be available for more games than Dykes, who is likely to break down at any moment based on history, and given that we need experience in the halves, I would rather have Noddy there with an exciting youngster in the No. 6 to be groomed for the future, be that Watts, Kearney or another.

I dont feel sorry for him, I don't agree with your last comment.

Although I'd trade an inch or two for just one of them...LOL

the myths continue to get perpetuated.
Who has missed the most games for the Sharks in the last 3 years?
E1 or Dykes. Whats the score?

In a comp starved of competent halves, noddy stands out like a beacon.

Keep him and keep winning.

Well said.

BK is like a friggen germ..we can't get rid of him! Personally id like to go for Soward and introduce this Watts kid! Dykes can take a "freddy fittler" type role....running the water!

do I deny that dykes is more likely to break down?

sorry, that is a poor question.

Anecdotal evidence suggest Dykes is injury prone.
Facts paint a different story .

If E1 does his cruciate next year, is he injury prone(according to the forum) ? no way.
Same thing Dykes? f*ck yeah.
Its a misconception perpetuated by people who fall into 3 categories.
the people who like E1
the people who begrudge dykes for going to parra
the people trying not to get caught up in the E1/Dykes argument by bagging both equally. So in dykes they find injury as a reason.

I tend to agree with what you have said there Reefy.

I was just enquiring as to who you would put money on to break down first?

In your opinion, who is in the better shape for the future?

I will not dispute your response as it is not completely clear in my mind which is the better option either.

I simply made a call based on my observations, but as I previously stated, neither are ideal, I don't see either guiding us to a premiership.

It is possible that we could get close based on the ability of players in other areas, namely the backrow, but that would not be to the credit of either half.

No i find the "no creativity" as my reason. The fact that Dykes gets caught with the ball so many times in attack, which therefore wastes a tackle. its frustrating as a supporter. Good 5/8th's have a decoy runner and spread the ball out, or they throw the dummy and split the defence which Dyke's legs cannot do!

He plays footy like watching a video ref check a try. Slow mo man!

Dykes is there as great halves option for now, or even as a reliable back-up option should another young bloke get a crack.

Noddy is different. If he's signed, it just about means his spot is guaranteed.

Oh f*ck

I still dont believe he is gone till I see him on he news talking about his new club.

I'm not sad to see him leave, his time has well and truly expired with us but I do believe he does love the club a lot and wants to stay. That is a shame.

I can see him getting another offer from the club and taking it. Similar to what we did with Beattie a few years back when we made a offer, he rejected and tested the market then re-signed for less then our first offer once he saw what his options really where.

Are the previous injuries suffered by Dykes more likely to recur than those suffered by Kimmorley?
