Kimmorley 'set to announce retirement'

AAP Thu, 26 Aug 2010 10:47:45

Canterbury Bulldogs veteran Brett Kimmorley is set to announce his retirement from rugby league after 16 seasons in the NRL.
The experienced halfback has scheduled a press conference for 12.30pm on Thursday where it is expected he will formally announce his retirement and will accept a coaching role at the Bulldogs.
The former Test halfback knocked back offers to keep playing from Canberra, Parramatta and his former club Cronulla before reaching the decision.
The 33-year-old has enjoyed a glittering career with highlights that includes the 1999 NRL premiership with Melbourne, 20 Tests for Australia and 10 Origin games for NSW.

when players go directly from playing to coaching are all contracts looked at by Shubert. What's to stop a club underpaying the player in his final year to make up for it with a highly paid coaching position next year?

So, Cronk, Slater & Smith might all be captain coaches next year?;-)

It says a lot when players like Barrett and Kimmorley would rather retire than get paid handsomely for one last season at Parra.

just means their bodies are telling them it's time...

i know in Baz's case it was his body and his family that made his decision for him

This issue I think was covered when JT was with us.

If the coaching job is apart of the playing contract, it will count towards the cap. But if in the instance of Brett Kimmorley, he signed the playing contract and then the Bulldogs offered him a coaching role. Whether or not Kimmorley knew he was going to be offered a coaching position when he signed with the Dogs 2 years ago is another kettle of fish.

JT played 20 games with distinction, but his body caved in during his last 2 games and was a reason we got stuffed in 2001 GF.

We should let players decide when they think it's time, good luck to BK, was probably tempted as was Barrett and they knew when to pull up stumps.

Yep, Kennedy made JT his personal doormat in the 01 GF. Should have been the Churchill Medallist too.
