I’m saying thats what they believe his market value is, and it wasn’t a valuation, they actually paid him. So that makes it more real than what you and I think it should be

To come up with a market value and ignore a contract he signed only last year is being disingenuous
Again you're ignoring the fact that it's a different market with different circumstances and most importantly different cap structure, you're also ignoring the reason they came up with the market value rule. 100% of SBW's contract is exempt from the cap, you simply cannot apply a hard fast rule with completely different circumstances. Let's remember market value is not about excluding players from the game, it's about teams rorting the cap with TPA's or ridiculous backended contracts which was the case with Folau.

Why did Toronto pay so much when they could have got him, or someone equivalent, for so much less?
Which top level player with similar marketability was putting their hand up to move to Canada?
This is what so many people cannot grasp, he's not paid $5 mil a year for his playing ability alone, he's being paid that mainly for marketability and promotional value. Canada is an entirely new market, they needed a marquee player who could create some type. You have to remember union is way more popular in Canada and with SBW being a former all black he was in a unique position to bring over those union fans

No I'm not ignoring anything
They came up with a market value by completely ignoring a contract he signed only last year. You're the one ignoring his current contract by saying it doesn't matter.
In fact it does matter, because you also can't have 2 contracts.

You talk about not excluding players from the game, but then mention Folau?

With the greatest of respect are you thick? He signed a contract where his salary was completely cap exempt and under circumstances where he had to relocate to the other side of the world, in any case like I said before market value isn't based on what a team pays for you in a completely different market with a different salary cap structure, it's based on what a NRL club would pay for a player of similar ability.
As for Folau, do I really need to explain the differences in the 2 cases?

heard Vlandy saying there was about 8 players coming back who will be in the same boat.
Do we know who the other players are and where they may be heading ?
Will they be valued at the contract they were on overseas?

If we’re treating SBW’s Toronto deal as his genuine market value, then his NRL career is over as no one, including Warriors, could fit him in.

Does anyone, including Roosters fans, believe that they are operating a few hundred thousand dollars under the cap this season?

Complete horeshit.

probably. They lost Cronk who was supposedly on a mill , michell and tetavano and only gained JMoz and flannagan. doesn't seem unreasonable.

That assumes that they were under or just on the cap last season, which is debatable, at best.

They let go of Kane Evans, Aidan Guerra, Connor Watson, Liam Knight and released Paul Carter before 2018 which might be why we could afford Teddy? Pearce would’ve been a like-for-like swap with Cronk? And we didn’t cave in to Latrell’s pay demands for this year. But you’re right. Roosters would’ve gotten away with it if not for a bunch of plucky, diligent LU posters.

Yes, I believe it. It’s called smart Salary Cap management.

  • Bring young players through your junior program or who are unwanted at other clubs and provide the environment for them to want to stay at the club, despite possible higher dollars elsewhere, eg Radley, Manu, Tupou, Flanagan, Aubusson, SST, Verrills, Friend, Butcher, Liu, JWH, Cordner
  • If players do search out bigger money elsewhere or you don’t think they’re providing value for money, let them go, eg Lattrell, Matterson, Blake Ferguson, Jennings, Kane Evans, Napa, Tetevano, Momorovski, Connor Watson, Pearce, Guerra, FPN
  • When recruiting established players, try to pick up bargain buys (eg Morris brothers and Keary) and hold on to them as long at below market value, or recruit quality at or below market value (eg Tedesco, Chrichton) and make them better, even more valuable, players.
  • Don’t throw huge money at risky prospects or long-term deals, eg Ben Hunt, Corey Norman, Milford, Darius, Jack Bird, Foran, Napa, Burgess and Inglis (bailed out by the NRL), Moylan, Shaun Johnson, Val Holmes, Barba, Jennings, Mbye, Brooks, Packer

Sure, the Roosters have made some of the above mistakes in the past, but they’ve got it right now!

If he wasn't given that insane contract by Toronto and chose to come back to the NRL at the start of the year, does anyone genuinely believe he would have accepted in the range of $400,000 a season?

No but as I explained previous that's not how the market rule works nor is it the reason the rule is in place. Market value concept isn't and has never been about prevent players taking unders but rather to stop teams using dodgy tactics like TPAs and backloading to unfairly assemble a team. In terms of just playing ability at his age and with his injury history he's worth no more than $600k-700k to any team.

Not trying to have a dig which seems to be the theme of this thread. To me, market value should be determined by what a player is willing to play for. If he wants to come back and play for the Roosters for a pie and a coke after the game, he should be allowed, provided he's not also getting a $600,000 City Ford marketing deal. My question is how the NRL arbitrarily comes up with this $400,000 market value when the bloke is a known mercenary, and would never in a million years play for that amount

What a player is prepared to sign for is irrelevant if its outside market value. I would think $400k/year is pretty generous for a 35 year old who was out of the game for 6 years and was ordinary in the couple of games since.
