Knights Fined for Salary Cap

The National Rugby League Board has today confirmed salary cap fines totaling $464,849 against seven clubs as a result of the final audit for the 2006 season.

The decision follows a full review of all salary cap audits and the club submissions made to the NRL Salary Cap Auditor, Ian Schubert, as a result of his initial findings.

Club Fine
Broncos $30,000
Dragons $74,975
Knights $19,260
Rabbitohs $54,145
Raiders $173,203
Storm $63,266
Wests Tigers $50,000

The breaches, whilst not relating to any deliberate attempts to circumvent the Salary Cap Rules, relate to a range of non compliance offences from failure to properly notify the NRL of third party agreements, the treatment of payments to players departing clubs, overspending in the ‘Top 25’ cap and in the second tier, the treatment of payments to managers and the provision of statutory declarations.

“While these are not deliberate, systematic attempts to cheat, the fines are an expensive lesson in the need for administrative diligence,” NRL Chief Executive, David Gallop, said today.

The fines may represent all or part of the breach depending on the nature of the breach as determined by the NRL.

“The Board has sent another clear message about the game’s commitment to enforcing the Salary Cap,” Mr Gallop said.

“Compliance can be challenging at times but everyone is subject to the same rules and every club benefits from the success the competition has enjoyed through the Salary Cap in recent years.

“We are in a period of financial stability for clubs, of increasing rewards for players and week in week out excitement for fans of all teams.

“The proper maintenance of the Salary Cap is an important part of ensuring that we continue to grow that success.

“The encouraging thing is that clubs are generally trying to do the right thing.

“The fines certainly show that some should work harder in understanding all their obligations but there is nothing that we can see in these audits which would suggest the sort of systematic abuse which would require the loss of competition points.

Clubs will have five business days in which to make any extra submissions to the NRL in relation to the fine amounts.

Well, well, well.

Storm and Broncos. Who'd a thunk it? And HOW could the Raiders be over the cap????? Who would thay have to spend the money one?

And we're pretty minor on that list. Nothing to write home about!

I find it hard to believe that the Canberra side has managed to go over the salary cap enough to warrant that fine. What are they paying their ball boys down there?

How is the salary cap Smith's fault? He didn't organise our salary structure from Parramatta. This is all Hagan and the administration's doing.

Eh? The breach relates to the 2006 season, so by your criteria Hagan has a lost to answer for, not Smith.

As for our performances, last week aside I thought with the departure of Johns we have been playing pretty well this season. Some people are never satisfied.

LOL BVM!!!

As everyone has told you, it's last years breaches :p

We're the lowest on that list, so that makes me feel ok.

I swear the Storm are regulars on that list, can anyone bring up all the past years breaches? I'm almost certain Storm are always over $50k over the limit.

i've heard they just throw 3 darts at a dartboard then multiply it by 500 or so...

also if there is a dispute the club CEO and captain must race gallop and nein's CEO of the day in a 3 legged race around NRLHQ.

You goose. As even Dilmah was smart enough to realise Smith had nothing to do with 2006 and if you had half a brain you would also realise this is the 5th year out of the last seven years we have had salary cap breaches (and one fo the smallest ones too).

Go climb back under a rock Baron.
