Knights in Preparation for 2010 Championship

On Wednesday, the New York Knights continued preparations for their 2010 AMNRL campaign, as the season kickoff looms. The Knights face the Boston 13s on June 5th at 8:00pm at the Knight's home ground located at Pier 40, Manhattan (map).

The Knights aim to defend their 2009 Championship season, the team's second. Under the guidance of third year returning Head Coach Guillaume Cieutat, the Knights are working on a combination of high-intensity fitness drills and Rugby League skills work. Said Cieutat, "Last year was last year...we must prove ourselves all over again."

The Boston 13s entered the league for the first time last year and had an excellent opening season, making the playoffs and being highly competitive in all encounters. Said Team Captain Gareth Baxendale, "There's no doubt that Boston will field a competitive team in 2010 and being 2009 Champions I'm sure that they and other teams are extra hungry for victory against us. We're keeping our heads down, preparing."

This year Knight's squad is a mixture of familiar faces and about 20 new recruits. The largest new batch comes from Columbia University, where Assistant Coach Hayden James coaches Rugby Union. The recruits also include experienced imports, several Union players stepping up to try League and a number of other talented athletes who are new to either form of rugby; trying something new in one of the nation's fastest growing sports. Even in the early practice sessions, there is a healthy competitive vibe amongst the players who are keen to prove that last year's championship was no fluke, as they compete for spots in the starting roster.

In addition to the regular team, the Knights will field a B team for selected matches throughout 2010. The first of which will be against the Boston 13s B team, immediately following the main game. With such a large and competitive squad, the B team gives all players the opportunity to vie for selection in the Knights regular roster.

Be there on June 5th at 8pm to cheer on your New York Knights, and enjoy an evening of hard hitting League.

It's good to see some teams playing 'B' team matches as it gives the rookie players a chance to play full on 13 a side games without the pressure of league points on the line. Hopefully more 'B' team games can be arranged this year.

Why would you play the reserves AFTER the main game?

I can't think of a single reason?

Especially when the main game kicks off at 8pm! It's gonna be a late finish for the reserve grade players. The bar will be shut.

The game is at 8 because in NYC you are lucky to even have a field to play on, that is the earliest time the filed is available. There is something like 8 million people in Manhattan and a handful of playing fields. There are soccer teams that train at midnight!

That is what people dont understand - the magnitude of having this field in Manhattan. I know the Aussie rules guys have been trying to get on it for 5 years. They play somewhere up in the Bronx!

They are playing the "B" team after because the length of the game depends on numbers on the two teams. As someone said that is how rugby union do it here so it is not really strange after a while.

The b team is a real positive move and I know the Knights have been getting alot of numbers!

Fairfax has the exact same issues with field availability. I agree with Mr Knight that the b team matches are only a good thing for the growth of League in the US.
