Knights seek to get Seu Seu back
By Josh Massoud
April 12, 2008
NEWCASTLE are preparing for an about-face on sacked prodigy Terence Seu Seu, with the talented hooker suddenly a chance to rejoin his junior club.

Seu Seu was sensationally dumped by the Knights early last month after recording a repeat drink-driving infringement.

The troubled 20-year-old has since found a refuge with Jim Beam Cup outfit the Southern Sydney Sharks, with whom he has started two games this season.

While Seu Seu has adjusted well to his new surrounds, this week's upheaval on the Knights board of directors has generated an unexpected opportunity for him to return home.

Newly elected directors Tony Butterfield and Robbie Tew are understood to have made it their first order of business to begin the task of enticing Seu Seu back.

Butterfield could not be contacted for comment last night, but a source close to the Knights said: "There's a feeling that Terence could have been given one more chance.

"He's got a few issues, but with a bit of work people are confident they can help him through it.

"He's also a local kid and the club has invested a lot in him."

Since arriving in Sydney, Seu Seu has been living with his uncle and Maori elder Wi Wharekura.

Wharekura confirmed he had been contacted by a Newcastle executive to organise a meeting. "They want to see how he is coming along and make sure he is OK," Wharekura said.

"It would be great if he could get another start at Newcastle, but there's a long way to go yet."

But any move to lure Seu Seu back to the Hunter would have to wait until next season because he has just signed a six-month lease for an apartment in Rockdale.

The Sharks, in the meantime, shape as the most likely club for Seu Seu to play NRL football in 2007.

His Jim Beam Cup outfit is loosley aligned with Ricky Stuart's team and Seu Seu was recently invited to train with NSW Cup feeder side the Cronulla Cobras.

But Sharks chief executive Tony Zappia denied moves were under way to sign Seu Seu to a short-term deal.

Knights coach Brian Smith meanwhile took a playful dig at Brisbane's depth of top-line talent as he plotted an upset in tomorrow's NRL clash at EnergyAustralia Stadium.

"What are they down to ... seven or eight Origin players, or maybe more?" Smith said of Broncos captain Darren Lockyer's injury-enforced absence.

"Darren's a great player and he obviously has an effect even for his state and national teams so it's handy from our point of view.

"But they've still got a team with so many great individuals."

The Knights go into the match well aware they were on the losing end of a 71-6 scoreline - the fifth highest total in 100 years - the last time they met.

He stuffed up. He should have to deal with the consequences. I don't want him back

I can't see an appartment lease standing in the way, but i'd be dirty if i was this Ferguson guy in the NSW cup side.

Just bring him back, there was no point in sacking him as he just signed with another club a week after the media stopped writing about him and moved on to another story.

Now we have lost a talented young player we have spent a lot of time developing and the sharks have gained one. Suspend players fine them make them do community work or get therapy or whatever, but don't sack players unless they actually do something bad enough to justify it.

I'd like to see him back, we invested quite some time and money in him, and I think when he grows up a bit, and with a bit of mentoring he could be an asset to the club.

LOL, six month lease, he just has to give them a four week warning in most cases. It's not like they won't find someone else to rent i to.

That if you stuff up like Seu Seu you could go from a $100,000 contract to $200 match payments.

I'd be happy to have him back at the club.

Sounds good, after giving notice for his rental accommodation, he can come back here for something like match payments (even a bit more than that I wouldn't complain), and then talk about real money next year.

Even though it may show the club as soft to some, having to pull up his kit, move down to Sydney then back here, and lose that nice $100k contract could be just the lesson that was required - he is only 20 years old or something and I reckon its likely that he would have learnt his lesson.

and if they can't find a decent replacement they'll welcome you back.

ridiculous.

why sack him in the first place?

i agree, spineless move from the club... and it sends the completely wrong message to the players.

the issue is not with the sacking - the issue is that other clubs are able to pick him up. the NRL should get involved in issues that bring the game into disrepute and when sackings are issued - they should be sacked from the NRL (for a period of time) - not just a club. if we're fair dinkum about it - then that's the only way.

He isn't that bad a kid if the things he has been caught for are the total of it all.
Wes and Sarge, to name a few, have done worse. Hell, i did much worse when i was 20.

We could use him. In fact, if Bedsy had been a bit worse we would have him in firstgrade this week and be thankfull for having him, because our current backup are Hilder and Young.

I think this is proof that the Knights are uncofident about being able to sign a first grade ready hooker for next year. Obviously Owen isn't ready and Flanagan must've been just a rumour if they're trying to get SeuSeu back. I agree with the comment that it's pointless sacking players that just sign with another club a few weeks later. Tilse, Costigan, Sarge, SeuSeu, Seymour to name a few, just picked up and moved elsewhere.

I wasn't happy that they sacked him, I know he stuffed up but I think they should have treated him similar to the way Parra treated Tim Smith, give him some help first. Anyway that's just my opinion.

I was very disappointed that he left so I would be happy if he came back, everybody deserves a few chances.

I don't think Smith wanted him gone in the first place. It was the board that made the decision so I doubt he will have any objections.

I never really saw any talent from him anyway, didn't steer the team that well, he gave away a sh*tload of penalties and was getting dominated in most tackles. But he was playing a sh*thouse team. I've done alot worst than his done and I've still got my job and finished UNI, i dont see the point in him getting punished further, bring him back.
