Knights seek to get Seu Seu back
By Josh Massoud
April 12, 2008
NEWCASTLE are preparing for an about-face on sacked prodigy Terence Seu Seu, with the talented hooker suddenly a chance to rejoin his junior club.
Seu Seu was sensationally dumped by the Knights early last month after recording a repeat drink-driving infringement.
The troubled 20-year-old has since found a refuge with Jim Beam Cup outfit the Southern Sydney Sharks, with whom he has started two games this season.
While Seu Seu has adjusted well to his new surrounds, this week's upheaval on the Knights board of directors has generated an unexpected opportunity for him to return home.
Newly elected directors Tony Butterfield and Robbie Tew are understood to have made it their first order of business to begin the task of enticing Seu Seu back.
Butterfield could not be contacted for comment last night, but a source close to the Knights said: "There's a feeling that Terence could have been given one more chance.
"He's got a few issues, but with a bit of work people are confident they can help him through it.
"He's also a local kid and the club has invested a lot in him."
Since arriving in Sydney, Seu Seu has been living with his uncle and Maori elder Wi Wharekura.
Wharekura confirmed he had been contacted by a Newcastle executive to organise a meeting. "They want to see how he is coming along and make sure he is OK," Wharekura said.
"It would be great if he could get another start at Newcastle, but there's a long way to go yet."
But any move to lure Seu Seu back to the Hunter would have to wait until next season because he has just signed a six-month lease for an apartment in Rockdale.
The Sharks, in the meantime, shape as the most likely club for Seu Seu to play NRL football in 2007.
His Jim Beam Cup outfit is loosley aligned with Ricky Stuart's team and Seu Seu was recently invited to train with NSW Cup feeder side the Cronulla Cobras.
But Sharks chief executive Tony Zappia denied moves were under way to sign Seu Seu to a short-term deal.
Knights coach Brian Smith meanwhile took a playful dig at Brisbane's depth of top-line talent as he plotted an upset in tomorrow's NRL clash at EnergyAustralia Stadium.
"What are they down to ... seven or eight Origin players, or maybe more?" Smith said of Broncos captain Darren Lockyer's injury-enforced absence.
"Darren's a great player and he obviously has an effect even for his state and national teams so it's handy from our point of view.
"But they've still got a team with so many great individuals."
The Knights go into the match well aware they were on the losing end of a 71-6 scoreline - the fifth highest total in 100 years - the last time they met.
