One other thing that Mullen brings to the team: he is a left-footer.

That way on the last tackle bedsy can pass it either left or right from the center of the field. The WHOLE line pretty much has to run up to pressure the kickers.

Mullen plays on the left side of the field, Joey on the right. Kidley can hang back behind both of them incase it doesn't go according to plan.

Truth be told, Mullen has outplayed Johns consistently for three weeks. I think its a reflection of the opposition's focus on Johns and lack of detailed planning on how to counteract Mullen. The kid has been able to get away some very solid kicks, consistently spliting the fullback and one of the wingers, and often bouncing several times in their own 10 metres before being retrieved. They just look a much better outfit, particularly on the last tackle, when Mullen is there. The fact he has had the guts to call for the ball on the last tackle must be something Johns gets inspiration from -- that he is delivering on his calls and putting in damn good kicks is a bonus... a very big bonus.

I think Johns has been sitting back a bit and giving Mullen some responsiblity. If Mullen is out, expect Johns to take huge step up

It cut deep didn't it... to still be holding onto it nearly a decade later must eat at you. ;-)

Interesting that you guys think I'm a Manly man ?
Steerike one ! [-X
Even more intersting that you think I joined this group 'cause I'm not a Knights man ?
Steerike two ! \\\\:D/

Luck's a fortune and even in GFs a refs call can make or break a team's fortunes. Who knows ?
Maybe Cliffy (would have possibly made the grade at the ISC - he's old enough) picks up the ball and runs the 70-80 metres to win the game for Manly.
Maybe the Chief gets sent off (or at least a 10 minute rest) early in the game ?
Maybe the boy wonder (Field) actually finds touch with one of his kicks and the whole game is different.

The 97 GF is one of the greatest games ever, ('cause there were errors made) followed by one of the biggest weeks ever. :alcho:
I just love reminding Manly fans of all of the above mistakes and errors (and more). The most amazing thing is... that all true ARL and SL followers cheered one of the great grand finals. Had the game been anything less, the war may have raged a few more years.

Newcastle were (and still are) the jewel in the crown for RL in Oz.

I've been a Knights man since day 1 and I still have my dicky little 'Hey Ho Knights Let's Go' hat over my bar !

Go Knights ! :D

Are you talking about Craig Field?

Correct, it was Field ](*,)

But.. he was our 'friend' that day !

I still maintain that we relish the 97 result so much more than 01, because we did it tough with errors throughout the game. In 01 we cruised through the 1st half and shutup shop in the 2nd. Similarly, v the gummies the other night it was a good win; 'cause we did it tough !
