Just a note, most union supporters didn't even know 95% of league players were actually amateur in the UK, Australia (the $20 a win $5 a loss my Dad earned in RL was equivalent to union's 'petrol' money), NZ & France.

Union's history of this was conveniently ignored and didn't point out players in countries like France & Sth Africa were paid more than their so called' professional' counterparts pre-1995

I think you would be very surprised on how much union players did get. I actually work with a guy that went through the Canterbury union system. And then went over to France to play for a club there for 2 years. He was given a job that he was required to work at if he wanted to make any money. This was all pre 1995. He was never given money in hand. Its like everything you hear something put two and two together and all of a sudden your an expert and know everything about a corresponding code.

Also I was asking Kurt the question, sorry I thought you were backing up his point.

I too heard of union players getting jobs. Japan comes to mind where pacific islanders with no Japanese language skills got jobs in panasonic, toyota, and so.

I should know I worked and met them in Japan, pre 1995. But I don't remember them doing much work! There were plenty of those situations. The company you refer to- tell you're mate he got a dud contract. Boy, made to work....lucky union players can now make an honest living ;-)

Mr Chip on your shoulder , before 1995 I was working with five All Blacks digging holes on the road and building fences for a company own by our club president .
Three years later (1996) they were all heading out to Japan , France and England .

To Polynesian Warrior

Well you really must think our little competition is crap and New Zealand's is the be all and end all!

Looked to me in the schoolboy game this year that our little players were as talented as theirs.

Rugged I didn't mean to compare the two but I can remember playing over 35 1st XV games a year in front of an average crowd of 5000 .
In Brisbane GPS I think there's only 8 GPS schools and they play each others once .

Well Kurtley Beale is in the NSW comp for a start and secondly most play club footy as well.

Then Polynesian Warrior why are you saying that for every "best player since Mark Ella" Australia has, that NZ has 100 just as good? I don't think I misinterpreted that.

Polynesian Warrior, I never denied there were many union players not earning a crust from the sport- but there are only so many positions available. If you read autobiograhies of players like Stuart Evans, he states in union you had your 'elite' union players who made a nice living and then those who didn't. It was a good reason he said that they went across to league to get what they were due minus the hypocrisy.

I wonder if those five All-Blacks came across Alfie Langer while he was digging holes for Ipswich City Council during his Jets days??

By the way, it ain't called a 'chip' it's called a reality. With reality, you get rid of the hate & hypocrisy that is directed at rugby league. Then we can get things back to normal and follow the game we enjoy without ridicule.

I can't think of one rugby league forum that isn't tainted with the vile/condescending behaviour of union supporters. Should see the fear, taunts, prejudice & so on, in the RL section of www.thefanatics.com

I can't think of 1 RU website where RL is rubbished to the degree RU is rubbished on this forum.

Most RU fans appreciate RL and enjoy watching it as well as union,

Trouble is that there hasn’t been hate and hypocrisy from MOST (You still get your die hard Union fan as you do in League) union fans and especially so since the game went professional in 95 its mainly league supporters that keep regurgitating it to make a point that is no longer valid.

As for the hypocrisy that mainly came from the IRB in England that tried very hard to hold on to some draconian set of rules that the players and fans knew well before 95 was crap. Do you not remember Underwood spouting off in the Eng media that the IRB were a set of old farts and this coming from the Eng Captain?

Have you found any person on this forum that likes both codes as condescending because they like Union? (Unless its just a personality clash obviously :)) The union fans just get pissed off for having to defend a game they like to watch.

No, but I remember Will Carling spouting about 57 old farts, as he was the captain.

Underwoods were just a pair of second rate wingers.

 so much for die hard league fans spouting off that Union has to buy in talent then :). If it is true then it shows the double standard in opinion that some people have on this site.

No double standards when you are in fact a souths league junior.Notice St Joseph's never mention his league background, when sprouting on about his obvious talents.pretending he was rugby union born and raised perhaps ?

The former PM of NZ David Lange made the famous comment ,years ago before union "openly pro">it never ceases to amaze me to see All Black players running around in expensive cars, wearing the best of clothing with little or no visible means of support".
You go figure.
Campese made regular trips to Italy, and the union fraternity admits it wasnt for the eating type of spaghetti. In sydbey club rugby union a couple of clubs were accused of car boot or under the table payments.
The great French union player Sella was poached from the French rugby league, during the amateur years. France was famous for its complete ignorance of the amateur ways.Ditto sth africa.
Japanese companies have let us say "assisted" union players in that country during amateurism.

I was just looking through last years Grand Final program against Kensington and I saw his name there.

I didn't even know he'd played that game to be honest. That was U-18's and he's still only 15, and would have been 14 at the time..

And sadly, Kensington did win, but I don't think it had too much to do with him because I can't recall seeing him do anything.

And I believe this officially makes him a Souths Junior because he made his senior football debut there.

Kurtley Beale is now in the AIS for rugby union.
I don't believe he was? I've been reminding a friend to get me his signature a few times, and a couple days after you posted this she introduced me to him, with rugby one of the last things on his mind.

He told me the whole backline is returning so I suppose every team is gonna lose by about 40 next season.
