We are in desperate need of a recruitment consultant, and Stanley has been mentioned in other threads, but I think it should be a serious consideration, here's why:

- He clearly has an eye for talent
- He was instrumental in getting the Halangahu boys, Latu and Loko & I'm assuming Villiame Hikila in 2023
- Even this year, there have been good signings with Cooper hale and Charlie Boyle, who are two highly touted youngsters for SG Ball
- Jasais Ah Kee would be one of the most talented, if not the most talented player in his age group. Assuming another from out west as he plays his school footy for Patrician Brothers.

So Clearly he has the eye for talent, and the persuasion of the young players. I know its not the same as NRL, but if that can be translated into spotting the best players from England/Cup/Flegg, or even if a fraction of his persuasive power translates to those players, surely we are leaps and bound in front of our current position. Also, wouldnt come with the high price tag of established recrutiment managers which this tight ass club would lick their lips about

Some interesting observations and Kyle may well be the answer- or part of it. However, an article in last Wednesday's Daily Telegraph (May 7) "Cracking Codes to snare young guns" alerted me to a recruitment area where SGI may be lacking to have a regular focus.

One of conundrums I've wrestled with over the years is how the Roosters are not only successful in the NRL but also their pathways teams (Matthews, Ball and Flegg) are nearly always competitive- despite having a tiny local junior league. Part of answer is the Academy they've established on the Central Coast and, with a population of some 300,000 and a relatively young demographic in the northern areas of the Coast in particular, that is a smart move. However, it didn't answer the question totally for me- particularly where Polynesian players of the calibre of Joey Manu, and now gun backs/ forwards like Robert Toia, Wong and Whyte have come from.

This article went into depth about how some of the established and emerging NRL stars have come through the elite Rugby competitions running in NSW and Q'land. Players like Kalyn Ponga (Churchies Grammar in Brisbane) and Cameron Murray (Newington) would have been exposed to top level competition, including international competition, from an early age and have been identified as exceptional by NRL clubs. Of course, in the case of the Roosters it helps to have three such Rugby schools, Scots College (GPS) and Waverly and Cranbrook (CAS) in their backyard.

The disturbing part of the article however was that almost every Sydney NRL club had an elite Rugby talent currently in its pathways system (and some like the Roosters had multiple juniors) except for one club- you guessed it- SGI.

It's just another of the many one percenters this club could do better at. When our new CEO Watshisname starts work, this is one of the many areas he needs to look at.

Thanks for the heads up AY and good to hear about the Meafou brothers- obviously some lazy journalism from the author of the article (Fatima Kdouh).

However, I would still argue that the Dragons could do better with the targeting of Rugby's elite. They do not have one player in their current top 17 who has come through elite Rugby while the Roosters have 6- Angus Crichton, Billy Smith, Suia Wong, Blake Steep, Robert Toia and Hugo Savala. Sometimes we have to learn from successful clubs systems and imitate what they do.

I like the idea of getting Kyle more involved, and it's great to hear about how he has been instrumental in securing some young players. However there would have been someone else doing the contract negotiations presumably, and so someone else at the club was also doing there job well with these kids and their families.

So I think we need a top class recruitment Director, whose job is to actually do the deals. He needs to be a people person as well as have a good head for figures, and a sound understanding of what the different squads are looking for. He also needs to work well with the Head Coach and Salary Cap List Manager.

And then we need to build out the most comprehensive scouting network we can afford. If Kyle is doing a good job coaching we shouldn't take this away from him, but maybe upgrade his contract to include some scouting responsibilities, and if Western Sydney is an area he has good contacts in, he could take that, or share it because it's a huge catchment.

But we also need scouts on the ground in other areas such as the Central Coast, QLD, UK, as well as various Union pathways. Then we need to invest heavily to bring the top coaches in to look after our different squads in an elite capacity.

I feel like we've made improvements in this area over the last 5 years or so, looking at the young players banging on the NRL squad door at the moment, but we can do more.

I remember before the start of last season, it was being talked up by club officials that we were going to set up an academy in NZ. As far as I can tell, this never happened, and instead of an update the club has just remained silent on it, hoping that fans have forgotten this was meant to happen.

I like the suggestions around recruitment mentioned here. However the comments leave me wondering what role Ben Haran may have in the changes... after all he has been GM of football during our demise. If we are talking "out the door" count me in.
Most important facet of our recruitment needs to be:
1) advertising / displaying to the Illawarra Juniors base that successful pathways exist in your local area. This includes having a presence at football meetings and training sessions of local teams (within both St George and the Illawarra) to display genuine interest in propagating talent and addressing actions where required to be seen to be growing Rugby League in OUR district. Talk up where ever possible ONE CLUB - OUR CLUB - Mighty Red and Whites
2) appoint an Illawarra Marketing Rep to address the fact that when the Dragons play at WIN - there is little enthusiasm for the club in the Wollongong Business District. Engaging local shops has a two fold affect - it engages the local owners and staff to have an interest and its free advertising to place "We support the Dragons" stickers in every shop front. Expand that to Shellharbour and other Shopping Malls and the local players will see that as "their" club (OUR CLUB)
3) growing links to Schoolboy football (and while the iron is hot - particularly with St Pats Blacktown). Been a good talent pool of late

Dragons are the dumbest club in the NRL from the Chairman right through to the Orange peeler
Don't get me and others started again on this matter Harry. There has been so much stuff on it over the years and still nothing has changed and nothing will change if the management stays as it is.

We unfortunately are following a club run by no gooders as far as I am concerned. They appear to have no foresight and don't like to pay out good money for people who we really need to bring us success.

Instead of the BOD getting Gould in to do a "review" of the club, they should have offered him million$ to take over the operations of the footy side of things like he is going at the Dogs. We get him, then we could have had Ciraldo who in my opinion will win several grand finals possibly starting this year.

Gould would have hired and fired and eventually afetr a couple of years have a Dragons squad winning premierships. Ciraldo was a choice by our club to be the coach except that Gould was able to pull him towards the Bulldogs. Ciraldo liked that we had a great nursery of juniors in the south coast and could see himself doing good things coaching them but to no avail for us.

Getting Gould would have been the best thing for the club but no the BOD possibly didn't even entertain that idea and stuck with the way that we are presently operating. We had the chance but the Bulldogs jumped in and got him and the rest is history.

I don't know how this club will become successful again - maybe never. Lots of us have been waiting for big improvements for years and told to be patient but my patience is wearing thin and I think several other forumites are the same. A lot of us are getting older and i certainly would love the club to be in the top 8 as some consolation if nothing else at this time of my life.

From memory, in the last handful of years we got knocked back by Fitzgibbon, Ciraldo and Ryles for the coaching position.
Do the board research why this is? Or make excuses for it?
