La Liga

You're telling me that UEFA would force Barcelona to go the long way around in order to quality for the CL? The Catalunyan league would get one of La Liga's spots for sure.

If Spain doesn't allow it civil war will break out. Catalonia want independence far more intensely than Scotland wants it. We're talking 90+%. They won't allow for that kind of majority to be ignored.

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the Jacqui Lambie of the Soccer sub-forum.

That's not what I meant. Yes they'll get their direct entry but there will be less for the 2nd tier teams. When La Liga loses Barcelona it will slide in the rankings and it will lose its other spot.

They'll go from 3 direct spots to 2 direct spots. Won't affect Barca and RM but will affect the already struggling 2nd tier teams who will have it even harder to get any sort of decent money.

No rational person can think separate leagues will have no negative impact.

So an attack on me instead of actually arguing the matter. Thanks for acknowledging I'm right.

Just using your own insult of someone else against you Mensa Man.

And you're not right on anything, as usual. I've already explained the illegality of any Catalan referendum and I don't know out of which oriface you plucked the 90% figure - the most recent opinion polls had support for independence in the mid-40s.

As for suggesting a civil war would break out, I'd suggest you think very carefully in the future before making such highly inflamatory remarks.

Concerning what would happen football-wise, Barca has expressed a desire to stay in La Liga. The PL had two teams from another football nation last season so Barca and Espanyol playing in La Liga is not unfeasible. Likewise a Liechtensteiner team is playing in the Swiss Super League this season.

If Madrid were to (foolishly) veto the status quo, in the UCL the champions of the new Catalan League would enter at the first qualifying stage just like the Gibraltan champions did this season. Barca would cruise through the qualifiers meaning the biggest overall losers would in fact not be in Spain but rather teams like Celtic, Salzburg, BATE etc. who would have one less spot to qualify for the group stage. Teams like Sevilla, Valencia and Villarreal would take one of the four spots La Liga has and would likely do well enough to ensure it keeps its 3+1 allocation. Under this scenario, Barca and Madrid would still play El Clasico in an annual two-legged State of Origin-style event.

(And yes Twizzle, Sevilla is looking good for a return to UCL football.)

This Ronaldo lad is pretty handy.

I'll say...

Bilbao are now 19th after that effort... The same team that finished fourth last year.

Valverde must be starting to sweat. Inexcusable start even with losing Herrera and missing Aduriz and Toquero.

Loving the start from Valencia, about time we did something, probably still finish 10th though, Hopefully get someone like Deulofeu at the end of the season from Barca, and a few more pieces.

You still harping on about this shit?

I'm telling you this is the last season of the La Liga as we know it. This isn't some internet conspiracy talk. The referendum is next month. There is overwhelming support for it. Even Xavi and Pique are for it. And the president of La Liga has confirmed they'll be out.

This isn't a hypothetical that is years or decades away. It's now. 2014.

The Catalan gov't has temporarily suspended the referendum you f**knuckle. The Spanish court blocked the outcome even though it hasn't taken place.

News travels slowly to Coffs evidently.

Also the LFP are a Madrid-based body and announcements like this are purely designed to frighten undecideds just like in Scotland.

There are plenty of examples throughout the world of teams playing in another country's league.
