It's 100% part of the coach/team game plan.

I think there was a big over reaction to the one in the second half. We were fresh off half-time and it was a chance to make up for our error.

It was either kick the ball to Penrith and give them a whole set to go at us or go for the 50/50 and try and make up for the error. So as a gambling man I felt that was actually the perfect time to try it, just a shame about execution.
Gotta disagree. Wasn’t the time to do it at all.

Yeah I've seen some debate about it on social media and I'm in the minority on that one. Like it wasn't that big of a loss IMO. Panthers got the ball back, just as they would have if we didn't try to win the short drop out. If it was at any other time I would have leaned the other way, but being fresh off half-time and having just made an error, I think it was a chance to steal back the momentum rather than just hand it easily to the Panthers (which I know ended up happening anyway). Disappointed in the execution but not the decision.

Short drop outs are becoming more and more common as you’ve probably got a 40% chance in getting the ball back and even if you don’t there’s a genuine belief that it’s harder for attacking teams to attack from right on the goal line as opposed to like 20-30m out

Miller doesn’t look like he will ever be a top notch goal kicker, think Ponga is better and Hastings but carrying an injury that restricts him. Wouldn’t hurt to be looking for a winger that can kick goals to replace Dom for 2024.

One of your best every week, not bad for a rookie.

You would think a Union convert could kick goals. Not his fault you have no one better.

Absolutely. Love what he brings to the side.

We haven’t had a decent goal kicker for eons but that need to be addressed by the recruitment/ coaching staff.

The short drop out isn't going anywhere and it shouldn't either. It's the right option in most situations, execution just needs work.

I'm very happy to see us persist with the short drop out. If it's not something Miller is doing spontaneously but it's something we are working on as a team, it actually sounds like we're ahead of the curve on something for once. I'm also happy to back our goal line defense and work on it all the way up to the finals. Hopefully Miller can get it right more often than not!

We need to be smarter at how to use the short dropout/kickoff, which means more variety. Penrith were stacking their defense in the exact location Miller was going to kick to, but we kept kicking it there anyway- it was no longer a 50/50 play.

Notice what Cleary was doing? He was kicking to where there was open space or a lone defender- sometimes towards the sideline, or centre field, could have been 10m deep or 25m.

And I still think he needs to drill the occasional kick low- aim for touch, or straight to a player hoping that they knock on or the ball rebounds back towards us to regain possession.

Great point. Hopefully that's all over our video sessions this week. I wanna see us do that dribble drop out from kickoffs sometimes as well. The one Ponga did that one time to start the second half against the Raiders I think it was?

I've always thought the drill for touch was an option players needed to take more tbh. I guess it's hard to pull off though.

Bit of a concern how much Young gets outjumped too for the tallest man on the planet. Not our problem next year I guess..

Yep, he had a couple of chances to ice the situation for us but fumbled it. No doubt he'll correct those issues by the time he gets to the Roosters 😒

I’ve asked a mate who used to play in the halves as a young fella and he says trying to drill a kick off or drop kick low on purpose is really hard and way more likely to go wrong than kicking it short and high. Fair enough.

Lachie Miller got 3 Dally M points? What the actual f#ck? Who watched that game and thought he was the second best player on the field? Whoever did just assumed that because he was on the screen a lot he had a good game. Absolutely bizarre and unexplainable.
Where'd you see this? I didn't think they'd release that until tomorrow.

Surely Gamble gets some points..

Daily Tele online. Buried in whatever garbage Paul Crawley was writing for the day.
4 Cleary
3 Miller and Edwards
1 Marzhew
Who the hell is voting on these? Yeo was easily Penrith’s best. Cleary deserves points for his kicking. Gamble, Friz, Mann, Saf and Crossland were all far more worthy of points than Miller or Marzhew.

I suggested in another thread that we should maybe try sign Tyson Smoothy to solve our dummy half issues, Smoothy is actually a decent goal kicker too, kicked at over 78% last year in Q cup

Just watching the game again, Miller's kickoffs seem very short compared to other teams. Ponga to take kickoffs when he gets back? I think we can get our kickoffs at least 10 metres deeper.
