Obviously a lot of things can happen over the course of a season, but if you had to step back and take an impartial view it's hard to see how you'd pick anyone other than us or the Tigers for the spoon. With a very weak roster and a captain who doesn't even want to play for us, not hard to see why we'll start favourites.
Hunt needs to go , but if he is staying needs to be stripped of the captaincy (as I have said before that's on Flann ) They all have to stop crawling up his backside to make him happy .......

AGREE!!
He’s not even in the top halfs of the comp
Cleary, Reynolds, Nicho, Johnson etc are way above him plus they can kick goals
He’s a crabber who telegraphs all his moves. Occasionally he’ll come up with a Hail Mary. Also the funny thing is he is paid the most. And he wants to leave?
Please

It comes back to the roster, if some of these rumours are true about firesales at the big clubs.. noting that there is a reason why those players are the first being pushed out the door... but those players are still huge steps up from our current ones.

We have to start nailing those signatures though.

Im hopeful of a 9-12 slot and at least fighting to get into the 8 until last few rounds
I would be pleased with that, rather that the the shit we have had for the last decade
a Few good signings for the year after (2025) and be hopeful of a top 8 slot

I'm predicting 11th or 12th on the ladder. It's a prediction based on the fact that out of the last 10 seasons played, we've finished 11th or 12th no less than 5 times. It seems like our natural position. Pretty sad really.

Can't see us any higher as Flanno has a huge job.

If he is able to nab the positions or players he's after, it's still a big change in personal. Add the fitness, actual coaching and injuries.

We were 5-7 at home and 0- 12 away but we were competitive for the last few rounds.

I'm super impressed with what he's done off the field, hope the players buy in and looking forward to his arrival.

Just looking forward to seeing his coaching.

I think you can break the 17 teams up into roughly four groups of 4 or 5.

There is the top 4, these teams are all super strong, consistent and have a really solid coach

There is the second 4 which are the strong but inconsistent team

There is the third 5 which are the average teams that have moments of brilliance

There is the bottom 4 which are consistently bad

Where abouts you finish within these groupings is often a result of injuries and bad refereeing but your allocation to a grouping is a combination of coaching talent, player quality and team ethic.

In 2023 we were bottom 4, consistently bad. However, my perspective was that we were consistently bad because we didn't play for the whole 80 minutes, we didn't have a team that wanted to play for each other and we had a coach who was unable to change his tactics and methods to try and resolve shortcomings. A big factor in this was there was clearly a divide between the players who liked Hook and those who did not.

I think with Flanno we have a strong modern coach who can work to address and improve team spirit. Ultimately 2024 needs to be about establishing a strong modern coaching methodology that builds a cohesive team with discipline and ethos of hard work.

If Flanno is able to address the division in the playing group and get them to pull together, play for 80 minutes and play with some cohesive spirit, then I think we will be in the third 5 and without injury we will be knocking on the 8 but ultimately falling short, because we do not have the cattle for a long season and we will fall short by about 2 wins, which will happen just after origin as Hunt starts negotiating to leave and the playing group loses a little bit of spirit.

If the Dogs have shown anything just buying lots of players does nothing to help team spirit or harmony, Flanno is better to focus on getting players with some guts and starch in defence who are happy to work hard for their salaries.

I think if we got a couple of star players, unless it was a superstar like Cleary or Tedesco, it might actually be a bad thing and would paper over the cracks as they could lift us into the second 4 on the backs of their performances but we would not have fundamentally fixed our team. Our focus for 2024 needs to be on the basics, team spirit/cohesion and identifying young talent. That creates a sustainable foundation for building a future.

In 2025 we appoint Cooper to the coaching staff, Dean Young has worked with our forwards to establish a strong defence with forwards who are not afraid to work and Flanno will have established a strong team culture. From that foundation post origin 2025 we can hopefully attract some spine players to flesh out our attack and a superstar forward who will be attracted by a team that will pull together and which provides a solid foundation for them to star in combined with the beach lifestyle in Wollongong.

The Dragons need to follow the Captaincy transition of the Collingwood Magpies (GOCF woohoo)! At the start of this year 5 time Copeland Trophy winner and F.... legend Scott Pendlebury relinquished the captaincy to a younger Darcy Moore. Scott remained in the team and played a huge role in their premiership. He is on his way to potentially playing the most ever games in the VFL/AFL.
Ben Hunt should do likewise. The problem is we have no obvious captain who is going to play 80 mins. Zac Lomax is a possible but Flanno should offer this carrot to a senior well respected player in another team to tempt them to come over.
BTW - out of left field - when do Souths realise Latrell will never win them a premiership as he has a habit of going walkabout? Would they ever punt him? He has recently moved into the St George area. Is he worth buying? Normally i would say no but in the absence of us buying anyone decent - we could do much worse.

Nice thought but if Latrell can’t win a title for Souths (thx Gus) how can he win one for the Dragons?
Latrell to the Dragons! Only when pigs can fly but it is OK to dream:)

I'm not sure where on the ladder we will be at the end of the 2024 season however I'm sure it won't be last. I do think we will be the most improved team in the competition.

Quite a few will be surprised at what a match-fit, disciplined, and well-organized team we turn into. However, we will all notice that the game plan for each match will be understood.

I'm a Pies supporter so at least I had one of teams win this year. The difference is the Pies have heavy hitters behind them, are run properly and kick up a stink if they feel they are being shafted by the AFL administrators unlike the Dragon's. Pendle's obviously did the right thing by the club in ushering a succession plan for when he eventually retires to give his support to a new leader, unlike Hunt who appears is only worried about himself. The Pies also have several possible players in their leadership group that could take over the captaincy while the cupboard is pretty barren for the Dragon's. Let's hope Flanno steers us in the right direction.

I wouldn't want Latrell in our club. The Roosters let him go to Souths as they knew what sort of player he is - very up and down and wants a lot his way.

I think Souths have a problem with him.

I’m not a fan of Latrell’s persona but in saying that I would love to have him at the club. He has immense strength and natural talent like Inglis and indeginous kids love him which is a big plus.
Why not we have signed players with unsavoury backgrounds before!

12th is my pick, Flanno will have some impact.
It's hard to predict next year. There are more balls to fall on the players chocolate wheel. You guys have to play Hunt at 9 imo. I believe the 9 is the priority in building a team.
I'm sorry to say that you guys and my tigers could be fighting for the spoon again unless Flanno and Benji can get us into another gear....good luck guys.

Well, it can't get much worse.

Can't see Hunt playing 9 with us and unless some doors are opened, he will be with us next year.

It starts again next year, both new coaches and good luck to you also.
