ST GEORGE Illawarra have squeezed in one of the the final pieces of their roster puzzle, locking down centre Tim Lafai on a three-year deal.

It brings to an end a busy period for recruitment chief Ian Millward and the club, that came into 2017 with several big-name stars off-contract.

Skipper Gareth Widdop has since been re-signed on a lucrative four-year deal while Josh Dugan and Russell Packer have confirmed their departures at season’s end.

Dugan brought his long-running contract saga to and end prior to entering NSW Origin camp, confirming he will link with the Sharks next season, while Packer will join Wests Tigers in 2018.

The club had been waiting on Dugan and Packer to decide their futures before making an offer to Lafai, but moved quickly after both confirmed their respective departures.

The Dragons headed off interest from several other clubs to re-sign the 25-year-old who’s found career-best form over the opening 11 rounds of the season.

"I'm excited to spend the next three years at the Dragons," Lafai said.

“The club’s been awesome for me and I wanted to return the favour.

“The club’s worked on a lot of things and changed a lot of things. It’s all been positive and it’s encouraging to see players are re-signing.

"When you're off-contract it's always one of those things that sit in the back of your mind so I’m glad that it’s all done and I can focus on playing some good footy for the club.”

It caps a stunning turnaround in fortunes for Lafai, whose first season with the club was marred by injury and off-field drama.

It saw him return for preseason determined to recapture his best after a directive from coach Paul McGregor to get “running fit.”

“It was just about getting back to playing good footy,” Lafai said.

“It happens in footy, you get injuries as you go along in your career and bouncing back and getting through those injuries was a real focus for me.

“I told myself if I could really rip in and give the preseason my all, I was a good chance of having a good season. Whatever came after that was just a bonus so I’m quite blessed to get the next three years as a reward for that hard work.

“Touch-wood, I’ve been injury free this year so hopefully I can keep it up.”

Lafai’s return to to form has been due, in no small part, to skipper Gareth Widdop’s blistering start to 2017 before injuring his knee in the Dragons Anzac Day loss to the Roosters.

Widdop is expected to return for Saturday’s clash with the Tigers at ANZ Stadium and Lafai welcomed the return of his left edge buddy.

“It’s good having Gaz back, not only as a player but as a leader and as our captain. It’s always nice to have your captain back,” Lafai said.

“He’s been awesome in working together with myself and Gypsy [Jason Nightingale] and Thommo [Joel Thompson] there on the left.

“We’ve really formed something good. We did the hard work in preseason and it’s good to see it paying off on the field.”

Lafai’s deal means only Nightingale, Josh McCrone and Kurt Mann remain off contract in the club’s senior squad. Coach McGregor is also un-signed beyond this year but is expected to sign an extension in the coming weeks.

What is this supposed to mean. Does this mean Mann and Milne leaving or staying

Well maybe this explains why Mann and Milne have been given a unfair run this year. Millward decided he doesn't need Mann or Milne. What a shame, none of our juniors are up there with these two players as yet, including Aitken.

Badly written ? Guess if you did the sums with Dugan & Packer leaving and pissing off another 5 players , perhaps retaining and extending contracts cost us more than we thought ? Surely Mann won't be left on the shelf and some club will pick him up but as we have not heard anything from his manager common sense would say we are still negotiating. Hope so as I rate this guy

The club is probably negotiating with Mann just because it hasn't been made public doesn't mean its not happening.

I guess some fans need assurances everyday something is happening like its the most important thing in the world.

If Millward doesn't announce that he's negotiating with these guys he is the worlds worst recruitment manager. Come on Coast get with the program!

Macdonald, Mann and Lafai are left side outside backs. Milne, Aitken and Herbert are right side outside backs. So the contest for right side outside backs will be between Milne, Aitken and Herbert for two positions - centre and wing if Nightingale retires.

On the left we would have Macdonald, Lafai and Mann to fight it out for two positons. Garrick to join this fight in a years time. So depth in the outside backs is assured if Mann, Milne and Lafia are retained.
Poss are you happy with lafai being re-signed?

I would say if we can re-sign mann that would be the icing on the cake. And I am not sure what you mean by Mann and Milne given an unfair run this season.
Mann is our utility for 2017. That means he plays everywhere to cover for other players. He has played almost every game this year and was starting 5/8 when widdop out.
Milne is behind lafai and aitken. They are better than him. When aitken was injured though milne was rightly selected.
How have they been unfairly handled this year?

Yes, very happy. Hoping we get Mann and Milne but I don't feel very confident about it. Don't really want Johnston but won't lose any sleep if he is signed as a winger. Really want someone identified to replace Packer and the fullback position sorted for next year.

Then I'll be really happy!
Just on packer, is leesan au mau still signed for next year? He has been excellent again this year. He could be the replacement for packer with a young guy onto the bench?
Also, I reckon keep mann but lose milne. Milne has been around for a couple of years and struggled to cement a spot.

Someone please help me hare. I recently read an article in which Millward went through all of the signings and ended the article with words like this concludes our signings for 2018. I've tried to find this article but have had no success. Maybe I dreamt it but don't think so.

It was an Illawarra Mercury article. Millward didn't say it, it was just the reporter.

Oh really? If thats the case then its a shame we will lose Mann. He is an excellent footy player. I am still hopeful we can keep him though

LAM signed a 3 year deal in 2015, do yes, he is signed for 2018. He may be a option as he is averaging similar numbers as Packer this season, but I do think he lacks Packers aggression for old ing the game. I would still like a prop targeted as a priority for recruitment.

We don't know the state of our 2018 salary cap because the NRL have not given a final number and we don't know how much Millward has spent. However, I would like the Dragons to recruit one hard nut prop for 2018/2019 in addition to the players we already have minus Packer. Only in this way can we maintain momentum while at the same time let our young forwards compete for their place in first grade.
