It hasnt been handled very well, and I was upset when Manly cut fatty way back when, but take the emotion out of it and how poorly its been handled and this is a good business move. They have a wealth of talent in the back row and while Thompson has more to offer they have to sure up these stars of the future first. No loyalty in footy, its a business.

Thompson has been great for them, no player deserves to play in a saints winning GF side more than him, he was there for the last 4 wasnt he? But ask yourselves this Dragons fans, if not Thompson who? Creagh? Lets hope something can be worked out.

but the cap that makes up 3.25 mill is taken up by the top 25 players at the club, in basic terms the second tier players will be paid lower than the lowest paid NRL player at the club.

The second tier cap used to be 500K, however I believe that's no longer the case and there is no longer a sallery cap for PL and Flegg players...again I may be corrected here.

The Bickerstaff etc contracts really had no place in the SMH article because they're a totally separate issue and don't effect the top tier salary cap, where Thompson and Timmins are situated.

The article gives the impression that Saints are signing probable lower graders like Bickerstaff at the expense of profile first graders like Thompson... which offcourse is quite incorrect.

There is always another player they can drop. And Bailey is leaving after next year so that would free up a ton of cash. Thompson would just need to take a pay cut this year and then get it all back in 07.
