By James Phelps
April 16, 2008
LANCE Thompson is set to announce his retirement after 13 years in first-grade rugby league.

The Cronulla and former St George Illawarra forward will announce his retirement at a press conference at Cronulla headquarters at 2pm today.

The workaholic backrower has struggled to return from a knee injury he sustaind early last year.

He was also diagnosed with Type I diabetes in what was a horror year.
Thompson, 30, made his debut for St George in 1995 as a 17-year-old schoolboy.

He went on to play 201 games for the Dragons over 10 years before being signed by Cronulla at the end of 2005.

He played 36 games for the Sharks from the 2006 season.

He should have had the farewell he deserved at Saints.

All the best Thommo. Thanks for the 201 games.

Should have played Origin at various times of his career. Very good player who will do well in the future as a player manager.

Sad to see. Good, solid, no-nonsense, play-until-the-siren-rings type.

You don't get too many like that these days.

Lance should be credited with the turn around of Greg Bird and Paul Gallen. Ever since he came to us their games grew and they turned into rep players. Lance was a joy to watch as a Shark. He showed his courage in playing against the dragons when we needed him even though clearly he wasn't right to play this year. A real dent in the sharks team now losing him and Williams.

also just to note the last game lance played on one leg against the dragons:

75 minutes - 37 tackles, 13 hit ups for 116m and 2 off loads
