32 is not a fine average when you have got someone as good as jaques waiting in the wings.

Hiney, Jaques had his chance against the Bangers and played a good old fashioned absolute slog shot to get out! Not a good sign for mine at all. Not saying he won't be a good batsman, but to experiment with him is too risky in the Ashes!

how would it be an experiment if jaques was picked for langer. if langer fails in the first couple of tests then jaques couldn't do much worse could he?

Considering Langer is proven at the top level, i'd still rather Langer at least until the end of the Ashes. That shot against the Bangers was just awful for a opening batsman. Jaques is unproven and he'll have his chance later after Langer retires.

yes but will jaques be in form then, you pick players when the're in form not when someone decides to retire. i will admit that was a poor shot jaques played against the bangers, but you can't hang a bloke on one bad shot. you'd have no one left to play for australia :D

If Jaques is in form now, why will he not still be in form in January after the Sydney test? I actually think Langer WILL retire after the Sydney test! By the way that shot against the Bangers was more than poor!

You know, Slats was dropped for Langer during an ashes series, he was filthy too, maybe this is a get square. It's an interesting debate he has started none the less.

Jacques deserves a spot on form, no doubt.

Langer deserves a spot out of respect.

Maybe Jacquesy should bat 6.

P.S. - Nice try JJ

Jaques has not played middle order in Australia, Hussey had even though it wasn't as much. He had experience there. Jaques is not a middle order batsman, he is a opener!

You experiment against weaker sides. They did that against Bangladesh. They tried the 5 bowlers and I was not that convinced it worked that well IMO. You use these series' against weaker opposition to experiment, you do not use a series against the no2 side in the world where we are trying to win back the Ashes to experiment!

what rubbish

Hussey was always an opener, then got slotted into the only vacant spot as a batsman, and that how it should be

How did Hussey get his experience as a middle order batsman, he certainly didn't get it playing for WA

I heard Jaques say himself in an interview, "if you're good enough you can bat anywhere", which I think was a hint to the selectors

Exactly right Twiz.

Opening batsmen should be able to bat anywhere. If they can face a new ball then they can certainly face the older one, even when it is swinging the other way.

I am almost convinced that he should bat at 6 in Brissy.

Jaques has also played a lot at 4 in county cricket, so much for the "He has no experience there" Also someone said Jaques was a middle order batsmen but was converted cause NSW had no openers.

Yeah I know. Locky is talking like he knows a lot about cricket, but for every post he's done in this tread, it's proving more and more that he knows jack sh!t

Jacquesy batted at 3 for Sutho when Matt Bradley and Matt O'Brien were the openers.

Like I sadi though, opening batsman should be able to bat anywhere in the top order.

Has anyone considered this?

Jacques
Hayden
Langer
Ponting
Hussey
Martyn
Gilchrist

Quite a strong batting lineup.

I suggested that last summer. That is certainly the side I would go for having seen Jaques dominate the English.

With Warne bowling so many overs in an innings, I don't think we need 5 bowlers, and that batting line up would probably be the best batting line up Australia have feilded in the last 15 years

I dunno if it would be the strongest in the last 15 years . . . but it does look very strong.

That's the 7 i'd pick, the order is still debatable.

People shouldnt get too carried away with jacques form against England. They have come in nothing matches. The Ashes is an entirely different kettle of fish.

Case in point, last Ashes series in Aus Martin love scored two double hundreds against England in nothing matches but when he got picked for the last couple of tests he was made to look less than ordinary by the likes of Andy Caddick.

Even against RSA and the Bangers Jacques looked dead set ordinary. Langer was Australia's best batsmen in the last Ashes series so he deserves a shot.

LOL Australia's current batting line-up isnt near as good as it was from around 99-01 when the two Waughs formed a formidable middle order around the likes of Gilly at his best, Slater, Langer, Ponting and Martyn.

Mark Waugh averaged 40, Hussey averages over 75, Hayden is IMO a better opener than Slater was and Ponting is a better batsmen now than he was back then.

Steve Waugh would have to be there. Averaging 75 is magnificent but it's not the same as an average of 50+ over 17 years.

I hate making comparisons like this.

Basing someone on County cricket is absolutely ridiculous. He has not batted in the middle order in Australia much at all!
