from memory league was played in coal mining towns in south of wales, much like in northern England. Two teams from wales entered english comp in early 1900s but didn't last long. Crusaders were the 5th Welsh rugby club in top flight & were squeezed of that, ending up switching to league, but north wales is not a league stronghold.

What a shame as its like my area before Gateshead Thunder came on the scene we had South Shields and Wallsend having teams but sadly it didn't work out...often bike, walk, drink in South Shields home of the great Andrew Stoddart (if you don't know of him wiki ) and it just feels like a Rugby League :(.

Another place that I don't understand didn't go over to Rugby League is Hartlepool a very working class place and used to have a top flight Rugby Union club alongside another 6 Union clubs with a population of just under 100,000.

York Valkyrie chairman Clint Goodchild wants the performances of his women's team to be factored into the sport's new IMG grading system.
Goodchild is also chairman of the men's side, York Knights, who came 15th out of 35 clubs in the list released on Wednesday.
Valkyrie beat St Helens this month to become the first female team to win back-to-back Super League titles.
"There is great value in the women's game," Goodchild told BBC Radio York.
The grading system, introduced by media giant IMG and Rugby League Commercial, measures clubs under five categories - fandom, performance, finances, stadium and community.
The scores are added up with a maximum of 20 points on offer. All 35 clubs in the men's game over the sport's three divisions are assessed and marked.
Having finished the season in fourth place in the Championship, York's ranking of 15th in the IMG list was one up from their on-field position.
Goodchild believes that the success and rise of York Valkyrie has been a big boost for both them and the men's team and for rugby league in the city in general.
And given that one of the Rugby Football League's stated aims is to increase the sport's reach and profile, the Australian businessman believes that the women's game merits serious discussion in the grading system.
"We like to see ourselves as a team trying to do a lot with a little in the women's game and I think we've achieved that, on and off the field," he said.
"But the fact that doesn't even get brought into conversation around the IMG grading - is there a real plan or what is the opinion of the sport around the women's game if it's not measured or taken into consideration?
"We're probably the only club that would seriously benefit from it being measured. But I do think there is a common sense element when you compare it to some of the things that are measured."

York have always had potential

North Yorkshire doesn’t have a lot of league either

They average as high as 2.5k on division 2

Great spot for visiting fans weekend away as well. Tidy little stadium, needs more jnr development work in the area and a deep pocket owner to get them to SL standard and stay there.

Hahah, Ive said it before, but it is just too funny. so these guys complain that the new system will do nothing but entrench the current top sides.

1 years later, they have focused on improving across the criteria and their club is doing better than ever…

are they still compaining?

They are, but it's just part of the 'us v them' mentality that their owner has been playing to for the past decade.

Whilst it will eventually stop working, for now it's been an easy way for Leigh to mobilise their supporter base. Credit to the club, rather than wasting the opportunity, they have been capitalising on it.

No I said it isnt in the end of the world shape so many rugby league fans like to say it is. And to his point, when haven’t SL clubs been dependant on owners tipping in? When was the last time broncos were self sufficient and not reliant on backers tipping money in? It’s been that way since 1997 and for some well before that.
