Isn't the inability of him training all week the reason why Cooper is not playing for Country. If that is correct, there is no problem with him being chosen for us with a fitness test pending on game day.

Banish Cooper from NSW, say Country

OUTRAGED officials have called on NSW selectors to ban Matt Cooper from State of Origin after he again withdrew from the annual City-Country clash - only to be named for St George Illawarra.

Cooper has been ruled out of the fixture five times due to injury, but on three occasions he has played for the Dragons the night after the City-Country match. Country officials last night labelled Cooper a disgrace and banned him from future Country teams.

They also called for him to be ignored by the NSW selectors after learning he will line up for the Dragons this weekend despite withdrawing from the Country Origin side through injury.

"While ever I'm in charge, he will never play for Country again," Country chairman Jock Colley said.

"As far as I'm concerned, his attitude stinks and if he is in line for NSW selection in a few weeks time, he should be barred from that as well."

It is understood the Country selectors drew a line through Cooper before the team announcement after coach Laurie Daley took a call from Dragons coach Wayne Bennett on Sunday, informing him Cooper had picked up a calf injury against the Sharks and would not pass a medical the next day.

He and injured Dragons teammate Beau Scott had been Country's first-choice centres to meet City Origin on Friday night in Port Macquarie.

Instead of playing in the NSW Blues' selection trial, Cooper be watching the game on television as he prepares for the Dragons clash with Manly just 24 hours later.

It is hardly surprising Country's patience with Cooper has run out.

He has a history of thumbing his nose at the annual representative game and, according to officials, too often to be a coincidence.

Since 2005 he has been ruled out of the clash with City five times due to injury.

Three times - in 2005, 2007 and 2009 - he played with the Dragons the next night and scored try doubles in two of those club games.

On learning of his club selection, Colley exploded. "A bloke shouldn't be surprised given his history but it really is a disgrace," he said.

"You look at the reaction of guys like young [Jamal] Idris and [Josh] Dugan and even veterans Brett Kimmorley and big Willie, when they came into camp, and you just shake your head at Cooper's.

"He's got plenty of form for it hasn't he."

The Dragons centre did not answer calls from The Daily Telegraph last night.

Manly coach Des Hasler did not want to comment.

You can understand Country being upset with Coops, but the solution is simple don't keep picking him in the side you morons. I reckon the city / country game is a complete waste of time nowadays and is not a selection trial at all for origin especially like it used to be. I'm certain Bellamy already has in his mind who he wants in origin 1 and the game on Friday night isn't going to change that.

The old story, he is not fit for the medical on Monday but is fit by the weekend. Just a product of an aging body. On you Coops, premiershio this season!!

i dont give a flying f**k about city country its a joke queensland have certainly not needed it to hand NSW their arses for the last 4 years

if you are determined to have a game like this why not have it selected from the NYC make it a proper U20 city country that way there is some value to seeing the future stars playing a proper rep game with solely NSW players available.

Oh well Jamie Lyon is playing for Australia. After the sh*t he pulled a couple of years ago he is lucky to still get a first grade jersey

Of course it is.. But this is the telegraph and important details are overlooked in favour of an agenda.

Point is as at Monday he wouldn't have had passed a medical, nor would have had been able to train for the majority of the week.

When you're a senior member of a club, not training all week is tolerable. You don't have that luxury in the rep teams.

The solution to this would have been to name him and then subject him to a medical by the Country doctor. Daley and the selectors fault for taking Bennett at his word.

The end result may not have been any different however.

I agree. Country should have named him, then ruled him out when he couldn't train on Monday.

Cooper has played for Country, NSW and Australia - he wants a Premiership - he doesn't care about the other honours.

NRL Premiership is the ultimate in League - no personal rep honours compare!

Cool.

Well that's just being a bitch about it now.

On learning of his club selection, Colley exploded.
Must have been messy.

"A bloke shouldn't be surprised given his history but it really is a disgrace," he said.
Cooper's history is that he has given great service to Country, NSW and Australia - appearing in over 20 representative fixtures. How many have you played Mr Colley?

Given this great service and history, if Cooper says he is unable to front up for a Country game, then that's good for enough for me, and it should be good enough for the officials and the tabloid media.

The bloke is now 31 and is giving his all the club side that made it possible. His knows his limits and risk of injury more than anyone.

Good. Why should the Dragons give these merkins the time of day?
