NEW Zealand Test forward Ali Lauitiiti has signed to play for Leeds Rhinos, the club announced today.
The Rhinos beat off competition from several Super League clubs and Australia's National Rugby League (NRL) outfits to land the prized signature of the 24-year-old second rower.
He is widely regarded as the best forward in the NRL two years ago but in a surprise move was released by New Zealand Warriors last month.
Wigan and St Helens were both keen on the strong-running, ball-handling forward but had no room either on their overseas quota or salary cap while Hull were also thought to have made a late bid to secure his services.
Leeds, who have a vacancy on their quota and room under the cap, have signed Lauiti'iti on on a two-and-half-year contract and say he is likely to make his debut in their next home game against Salford on Friday, May 28.
