No it is American sports in general, the NBA definitely has this culture. Look at how many 4th quarters Curry didn't play this season, once the game is beyond doubt in basketball they take their foot off the gas and put the bench warmers and usually the other team does as well so the margins don't close much.

Its a hell of alot worse in College and High School sports though where teams regularly are clearly outmatched.
