League at the Library

Spent a recent day off at the Qld State Library looking at the newspaper reports of old test matches, including the first test match held in Brisbane, 1908 (of course not THE first test match).

Makes for a heart-warming experience to read about the beginnings of International Rugby League.

I have spent time over the years looking up old newspaper reports of games etc.

I have some great reports from the Newcastle Herald about public meetings held to set up a team to play in Sydney in 1908 and to start a Newcastle comp in 1910.

I also have heaps of reports from different papers on the 1953 US All-Stars tour.

I've been working on a project with a mate whose grandfather Arthur Hennessey founded Souths; we've gone through all of his old scrapbooks and it's a genuine treasure chest. If I get some time I might post photos of some of the stuff in there, it mostly relates to Kangaroo tours from 1908 to about 1920, boxing and club football in both hemispheres.

Btw, I definitely recommend Sean Fagan's (rl1908.com) latest book 'The divide of League and Union' it's the best tome on the subject bar none.

Just about all newspapers are available on microfilm.
The newspaper room at the Mitchell Library in Sydney has just about every newspaper ever published in NSW and most from round Australia available.
You can read firsthand reports of just about every International game ever played if you want to spend the time looking - and you can photocopy the articles as well.
Many of them have pictures as well - but the quality is pretty poor.

Interesting stuff Copa, I've been using the NAA a lot lately for genealogy research, not thinking to stop and do a rugby league search.

Half the family I was looking for wouldn't have ancestors with immigration records. ;-)

A quick search and I came across this interesting piece regarding a proposed tour to South Africa:

Wow.. good find..

I like this photo from the War memorial site.. and did you see the length of the grass for some of the games in the NT... nearly half a metre long on some parts of the "field"

New Guinea. 11 November 1943. Two defenders of the Field Ambulance team tackle the opposition during the final of the New Guinea Rugby League football competition.

"RL and the army during WW2" would make a interesting book....

I was in the national museum over the weekend and they have two original kangaroos caps on display. What ever happened to them?? When did they stop being handed out?

They look like old style cub scout caps.

Anyone serve in the army now or very recently ?

I had an ex-AFL join the club I played RU in, to play for the first time.

He said he was doing it to leanr how to play RU, because he was enlisting the following year and only AFL and RU were allowed to be played in the Army, and he was to be stationed in Brisbane ?

Is this true in that you can't play RL in the army anymore ?
