I would guess that about 700 people would have been in their AFL gear in the Eastern Stand which was great to see.

This is the start of a long process that in the next three to four years will see Storm build it's membership base and the crowds coming to the games to sustianble levels.

WITH NO HELP FROM THE BRACKS GOVERNMENT

I made sure I took off my Collingwood jumper.

Bunch of f**king spastics.

Nah cant be true Stormwarning the president trashed all that talk on his weekly TV show.

D'oh - of course - I mean one of his weekly TV shows...

Anybody taking bets on when a certain AFL clubs president (or board) flicks the coach they brought in, and while he surprised a few with early success is starting to realise that he is (back) in struggle street?

Hoggy - any ideas there?

when will you idiots learn that the govt does what the majority of the people want, and the majority of people in melbourne couldnt give two hoots about the storm, so why throw money at them? no votes in that. No conspiracy against league either. That's politics, and its also what sells papers where the herald sun is concerned, not some far fetched conspiracy to destroy rugby league.

Syphon, have you ever been over the bridge?

"The govt does what the majority of the people want".

Since when?

Next you'll be saying that Princess Di is still alive and living with Elvis behind a McDonalds store.

No I didn't say that you said "The govt does what the majority of the people want"

Govt's do what they want to so they can get re-elected, not what the majority of the people want. Do you know anything about politics?

Or do work for a pollie, are a pollie or doing a pollie?

Would love to hear you repeat those words out in West Sydney, West or East Melbourne, the farmers, exporters, hospitals, police force....I could go on but you still wouldn't learn.

Most Government's get into power with less than 50% of the majority vote.

Hence the preferential voting system so the ones that get in are the ones that are usually least hated as opposed to most wanted.

So the majority of people are therefore not voting for the Government.

So syphon is a androtop.

The government is supposed to be fair and indiscriminant. If they're prepared to compensate one code for the inconvenience and potential loss of earnings, then they should also be prepared to compensate others. To do otherwise leaves them open to allegations of discrimination. It's compensation, not a government grant.

The Storm should approach the government with a request for compensation.

poor hoggie, not everyone is willing to tow the party... err... storms line so he gets in a tither.

The club is a financial drain on the NRL. There are 10,000 votes in it, MAX. They win a comp, are regulalrly in the finals and still pulling the game down with their appaling crowds and financial losses. Who cares if the media or the govt dont go out of their way to help the storm?? ALL THE MORE REASON TO PULL OUT!

It might be all well and good to 'pretend' there is a pseudo national comp but at the end of the day RL is struggling for money and there are country and grassroots clubs folding everywhere. The NRL needs to pull out of Melbourne, solidify their finances, and be in a position to build, as opposed to struggling to cut the black year in and year out. Kids all around country NSW can thank the storm they can no longer play the game. How many RL clubs are there in the WHOLE of Victoria? Like 6?

So if this is the attitude of the Victorian Govt, then throwing copious amounts of money at the Storm to keep them afloat would be far better served elsewhere.

No. The storm receive the same NRL grant as all other clubs. The rest of their funding comes from money they generate and News Ltd - a corporation. You're comparing a democratically elected government paying compensation with a corporation making an investment. Two very different things. A corporation can invest money where they please.

Well, I finally got around to doing it. I went into Steve Bracks office yesterday and spoke to one of his staffers, John Pearson.

I asked him:

1. A few years back there was some money earmarked for the upgrade of Olympic Park, I was looking over the budget this week (a lie, I'm relying on SW for my facts in these questions) and there's no mention of any money for any upgrade. Two things I'd like to know are what happened to that money and when will the upgrade occur?

2. In the budget papers there's been an allocation of money set aside for the AFL to recompense AFL clubs affected by the 2006 Commonwealth Games. What money has been set aside for other sporting clubs/competitions that are affected as much, or even more, than the AFL?

John tried ringing the Minister for AFL's office but there was no answer, he left a message regarding my questions and assures me he will email me once he has a response. I don't expect anything to come of this but I'll post the reply if I get one.

Got my reply, pretty quick all things considered, took under a week. But as I expected it didn't really answer my questions.

Steve Brack's office said:
Dear Andrew,

Further to your visit to the office last week we have had a reponse from
the Ministry of Sport and Recreation to your questions.

1. Money for the upgrade of Olympic Park was in the 2003 budget and that
amount still applies. As I had suggested, in budget announcements, only new one or multiple year funding is included.

2.We have been advised that the work for the Commonwealth Games will be completed after the Rugby season,so it will not have any impact on the
Melbourne Storm.

I trust this is of assistance. Have an enjoyable season.

It seems obvious that from the response the work for the Commonwealth Games will have no impact on the Storm, hence no need for compensation.

So you are saying the majority of people want the pollies to vote themselves a payrise?

I sought further clarification of the brief answers that I got from the Minister for AFL's office via the Premier's office and finally got a reply some three and a bit weeks later. Here is the reply:

1. Money for the upgrade of Olympic Park.

· What exactly is planned on being upgraded and when will it occur?

Ø removal & replacement of the Athletics Tracks,
Ø upgrade to supporting athletics infrastructure and
Ø upgrade of the infield perimeter drain

Ø upgrade works on the track is scheduled to take place in the Storm's
off season The infield (currently used as a supplementary
training venue) will still be available for the Storm to train
on, if required, whilst works are being undertaken on track
replacement.
If the Storm qualifies for a home final, the MOP Trust has
advised Storm that they will assist them in trying to relocate
the game.

· How much money has been set aside to pay for the upgrade?

Ø $2.7m Bracks Government capital contribution

2. If the Storm will be affected by the Commonwealth Games ?. and the
AFL is being compensated for the effects of holding the Games then

· how much compensation is proposed for the Storm?
· If no compensation is proposed for the Storm can you please obtain
detailed reasons why.

Ø MOP Trust have had discussions with Storm regarding this but there is
no information available to us regarding progress in these discussions.

In relation to your other comments, I have been advised that there was
significant development of Olympic Park aimed at catering for Storm's
requirements and costing $4.2m prior to Storm being established. The
government has provided funding for the development of rugby league through
the VRL and, through MOPT, facilitated the return of the Storm to Olympic
Park in 2002. Furthermore, I am informed that the Minister, his staff and
other Govt Minister's have attended many meetings with representatives of
Melbourne Storm relating to the future of the Club and the development of
the Sport in Victoria.

That is truely pathetic! They are obviously just upgrading athletic facilties and abandoning support for the Storm. If we get a home final they will help relocate.

That is a cop out! It's a disgrace esspecially compared to the level of support out Brisbane government gives the Lions. They are getting ANOTHER upgrade next year for christ's sake! :x :x :x

The reason the Gabba is getting an upgrade is bcause the Lions get a full house at nearly all games. From what I have seen on TV, the Storms attendances are pathetic. This lack of attendance should be blamed on the NRL.
The NRL need to generate a successful advertising campaign in order to raise the Storms' profile in VIC.
The Lions/AFL have gone well due the AFL's desire to reach as many people as possible through advertising and Auskick.

Well, that and the fact there are soo many freaking southerners up here now.
